My Favorite Hotels

Rockhouse Hotel

1

Rockhouse Hotel

The lush, laid-back Rockhouse creates a holistic haven -- gourmet dining, morning yoga, cliffside loungers, a premium spa, no kids under 12, and beautiful eco-appropriate design. But most astounding are the reasonable rates. (The slightly chicer Caves costs about three times more.)

Caneel Bay Resort

2

Caneel Bay Resort

Built from a historic sugar plantation, this profoundly serene 166-room resort sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel's attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean's best resorts.

Sivory Punta Cana

3

Sivory Punta Cana

One of the few boutique hotels in Punta Cana, the quiet, 55-room Sivory lures mostly couples to its secluded location -- about a 60-minute ride from the airport. Service is impressive, as is the natural setting, but the beach doesn't compare to those further south.

Geejam

4

Geejam

The Geejam is made up of only five private, high-tech cottages on the lush (rainy) foothills of Port Antonio. The setting is gorgeous, the service is extraordinary, and one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches is only 10 minutes away. Quiet isolation it has; a pool, spa facilities, and direct beach access it does not.

The Maritime Hotel

5

The Maritime Hotel

Housed in a unique building in the heart of artsy Chelsea -- near the clubs and designer flagships of the Meatpacking District -- the 120-room, nautical-themed Maritime boutique hotel offers luxury-level comfort at a very reasonable price (thanks, in part, to its slip off the "cool kid" radar since 2003 and especially after the Standard hotel opened in 2009).
