Bottom Line

The 405-room Albuquerque Marriott offers exactly what you'd expect in a mega-chain of this size and price point: a large pool, modern fitness center, and decent-to-great views from its high-rise rooms. Room decor, though, is also what you'd expect -- comfortable yet basic furniture, hospitality style carpeting, and little personality. The bathrooms are nice, though. And large flat-screen TVs and modern coffeemakers with free coffee are a nice touch. Be prepared to pay a high fee for Wi-Fi, which is an annoyance considering comparable properties like the nearby Crowne Plaza Albuquerque offer it for free.

Following up on the 2008 renovation of its rooms, the Albuquerque Marriott finished its facelift with updates to the lobby, restaurants, and other public spaces, which gives the hotel a more consistent appearance. Good thing, because as it now stands as a

Location

In the Uptown shopping neighborhood, within walking distance of restaurants

The Albuquerque Marriott rises high above Uptown, a shopping district comprised of chain stores like Apple and Victoria’s Secret. The hotel is also close to I-40, making it a quick drive to most of Albuquerque’s attractions, such as the Sandia Tram and Old Town. Plenty of restaurants are also within walking distance.

Sitting along the Rio Grande at an elevation of 5,312 feet, Albuquerque occupies a high-desert environment. The city was founded in 1706 by the Spanish as a colonial outpost in the New World. Today, Albuquerque is home to more than 530,000 people of more than 70 different ethnicities, including Native Americans, Latinos, and Anglos, making it the largest city in New Mexico. Albuquerque retains connections to the past and its culture in the architecture, artwork, and cuisine found throughout the city.

Less known to some, Albuquerque is also a center of high-tech industry and research. The Sandia National Laboratory, General Electric, and Kirtland Air Force Base all call the city home. It’s also the ballooning capital of the world. Albuquerque hosts the International Balloon Fiesta each October, an event that is arguably one of the most photographed in the world. Local hot air balloon companies offer rides to visitors year round.

As a four-season city with 300 sunny days a year, Albuquerque has an active community of golfers, hikers, skiers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and fishermen. The Sandia Mountains to the east provide a high-altitude respite from the summer heat and many miles of forested trails, and a winter playground featuring Sandia Peak Ski Area. Any visit to Albuquerque is incomplete without a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, the longest tram in the world, ascending 2.7 miles from the outskirts of the city to the Sandia Mountains at 10,378 feet.

Whatever you do in the outdoors here, be sure to stay well-hydrated -- mild temperatures can be deceiving, and the high elevation can take its toll even on the fittest adventurers.

Rooms

Spacious and basic modern-chain decor with some excellent views

The rooms are relatively modern -- at least by mid-level mega-chain standards. There’s not much emphasis on New Mexico in the decor, with a few framed black-and-white photos of local scenes on the walls. Otherwise, it’s purely the Marriott look with dark wood furniture, patterned carpet, extra pillows on the beds, and decorative light fixtures. Granite counters complete the updated look in the bathrooms.

  • Flat-screen TVs
  • Coffeemakers with free tea and coffee
  • Bath and Body Works toiletries
  • Windows do not open
  • No in-room safes
  • AM/FM alarm-clock radios
  • Basic shower/tub combos
  • Views of either the Sangre de Cristo Mountains or over the city
  • Concierge-level rooms offer access to the Concierge Lounge with free breakfast and snacks.

Features

A large pool, great views, but no on-site spa

For its large 405-room capacity, the hotel has an excellent-size indoor/outdoor pool (though they could add some extra lounge seating) and spacious, modern fitness center. The pool is located in a secluded courtyard with adjacent meeting space where weddings and other events are frequently held. (With 16,000 square feet of meeting space overall, the Marriott is a popular spot for events and conventions.) Cielo Sandia is the lone restaurant on the property and tends to garner good reviews, and there’s also a nice lounge in the lobby along with an extensive gift shop.

  • Fee for Wi-Fi
  • Large indoor/outdoor pool
