Art enthusiasts take note: The luxe hotel brand Le Meridien has released eight new short films in conjunction with the Tate London. Each film is narrated by a different pop icon; the roster includes Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming, Academy Award-winner and the BBC’s 12th “Doctor Who” Peter Capaldi, and indie rock duo The Kills. Created as part of Le Meridien’s “Unlock Art” program — which grants hotel guests access to some of the world’s top art institutions free of charge — these brief films show off some of art’s greatest historical movements, from surrealism to pop art.
The other topics discussed on tape include performance art, the international art market, women in art, the art of the nude, humor, and double acts on the artistic stage. The Tate does an excellent job of showing off its varied collections, as well as its gorgeous architecture. All in all, the videos successfully encourage visitors to get out of their hotel rooms and immerse themselves in London’s art scene.
But you don’t have to be in London to make use of the brand’s “Unlock Art” program. While it’s certainly hard to compete with the Tate, guests of Le Meridien Philadelphia can visit the Institute of Contemporary Art, while those at Le Meridien Cambridge-MIT can explore the mathematical side of human artistic expression at the MIT Museum.
This isn’t the first time hotels have made the arts a priority. Many — including Las Vegas’ Bellagio and The James Chicago — have museum-worthy art galleries on-site. Others, like NYC’s boutique property Chambers bring art off the walls and into the rooms, with stunning murals and one-of-a-kind pieces.
