  • Fee for Wi-Fi

Bottom Line

With 240 suites surrounding a large pool complex, Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort is Divi's only tower property, just 11 minutes from the capital of Oranjestad. It's located on Palm Beach (not quite as wide as Druif Beach, where its sister properties are located), and guests will have easy access to the High-Rise district's restaurants, casinos and nightlife. Suites come in a range of sizes (studio, one, two, or three bedroom), and have fully equipped kitchens, flat-screen TVs, DVD players and balconies -- all with ocean views. The newer Beach Tower offers upgraded amenities such as stainless steel appliances and washer/dryer combos. The numerous features -- including two popular beachside restaurants, tennis courts, a modern fitness center, ballroom, and spa -- make this resort feel much bigger than it actually is. But there's a fee for Wi-Fi and free extras are rare.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

A resort for all types of travelers, though the clientele seems younger than at other Divi properties

Divi Aruba Phoenix, with its two neutral-colored towers, manages to appeal to all types of travelers -- though the clientele seems younger than at other Divi resorts. The units in the older wing appeal to families and couples watching their budgets, while the more modern suites and penthouses in the newer tower attract a discerning crowd, and even the occasional dignitary.

The hub of the resort is not the lobby (this palatial area feels sterile and remains quiet) but rather the main pool complex next to the Pure Beach bar. Even in bright daylight, this hot spot has a sophisticated vibe. Happy hour starts at 4 p.m. and attractive young people can be found lounging on the white furniture sipping colorful cocktails. On Sunday afternoons, this becomes the ultimate party scene when live bands play.

Couples will likely appreciate the romantic dinner atmosphere at Sunset Beach Bistro, and families may like the fully equipped kitchens and children's activities.

 Location

Perched on the southern end of Palm Beach, in the High-Rise hotel district

Aruba is a small island 15 miles north of Venezuela, known for its white-sand beaches and constant trade winds. The Divi Aruba Phoenix is situated at the southern end of Palm Beach in the High-Rise hotel district, just 11-minutes from Aruba's capital city of Oranjestad and Queen Beatrix International Airport. (The Low-Rise and High-Rise districts are exactly what they sound like, with low- and high-rise hotels, respectively. The High-Rise section fronts Palm Beach and has close proximity to shopping, restaurant and bars, but the Low-Rise section to the south tends to feel less crowded.)

A rental car is recommended (there is a desk on-site), but taxis are readily available 24-hours a day. Neighboring High-Rise resorts, like the Westin, can be reached by walking along the shore. Free transportation is provided to the Alhambra Casino.

  • 5-minute drive to popular Eagle Beach
  • 5-minute drive to Palm Beach for high-rise hotels, restaurants and shopping
  • 8-minute drive to California Lighthouse
  • 9-minute drive to Tierra del Sol golf course
  • 10-minute drive to Alto Vista Chapel
  • 11-minute drive to downtown Oranjestad and the cruise terminal
  • 13-minute drive to Queen Beatrix International Airport
  • 21-minute drive to Arikok National Park
  • 23-minute drive to Savaneta for beachside dining
  • 34-minute drive to Baby Beach

 Rooms

A range of unit sizes -- all with ocean views and kitchens -- suit those on business or pleasure

Divi Aruba Phoenix offers 240 rooms in two separate neutral-colored towers.

Suites (studio, one- or two-bedroom units) in the original tower have slightly dated Caribbean decor in yellow and blue and offer full ocean views with private balconies. Amenities include fully equipped kitchens, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs with DVD players.

The Beach Tower suites (studio, one-, two- or three-bedroom units) are located in the newest resort section and come with a similar color scheme of yellow and blue, though furnishings are newer, and upgraded amenities including granite countertop surfaces, stainless steel appliances, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, washer/dryer combos, and private balconies (partial or full ocean view).

  • Two queens or one king bed
  • Duvets
  • Fully equipped kitchens
  • Balconies with ocean views (partial or full)
  • Flat-screen TVs and DVD players
  • Toiletries by "Green"
  • Air-conditioning
  • Ceiling fans

 Beach

Located on the southern end of Palm Beach, within strolling distance of other High-Rise resorts

Palm Beach may not have the ample beach space that sister resorts Divi Aruba and Tamarijn Aruba boast in the Low-Rise district; however, Palm Beach does have easy access to other High-Rise resorts, reached simply by strolling along the beach.

For those looking to play in the water, an activities coordinator is situated on the beach and can arrange a number of non-motorized water sports and tours.

Though cleaned daily, the shore does show seaweed wash-up. Besides this flaw, waves are calm and water is shallow for a few hundred feet, making it a great swimming spot for all ages. On shore, straw huts and tall palms provide shade, though the main beach area can get crowded with guests, especially in peak season. Privacy seekers can walk along the pier or down one of the paths toward a hammock.

Sunset Beach Bistro is located right on the sand.

 Pool

Two areas for freshwater swimming, including the main pool complex adjacent to Pure Beach bar

The main pool complex consists of a series of rounded turquoise pools separated by walkways and palms trees. This is the hub of the resort, situated next to the Pure Beach bar where guests tend to congregate most hours of the day and evening. Cocktails can be enjoyed at the swim-up bar or on one of the lounge chairs scattered around the perimeter. Most room balconies overlook the complex (and the ocean beyond), and at night, the area is lit in bright colors, creating an atmospheric setting.

On the other side of the original tower is a smaller, quieter pool area.

 Spa

A spa and salon with a variety of treatments, including couples massages on the beach

The Pure Spa is located in an attractive space next to the fitness center. Therapeutic massages, natural stone massages, organic facials, manicures, and pedicures are offered in the two treatment rooms. There is also a relaxation area, a sauna, locker rooms and shower facilities. Couple massages can be arranged at the Spa gazebo right on the beach.

 Family

A family-friendly resort with spacious suites, safe swimming, and children's activities

  • Spacious suites come with kitchens or kitchenettes
  • Children 12 and under stay free.
  • The Palm Beach location is ideal for young ones, with areas of calm waves for swimming and white sand for sculptures and castles.
  • The children's activities program includes T-shirt painting, scavenger hunts, bingo, water aerobics, pool volleyball, beach power walks, movie nights and karaoke.
  • For a romantic night out, the concierge can help arrange childcare (all references are screened by the resort.)

 Food

Dining options include two full restaurants, a French market, and 24-hour room service

  • One of the island's best-known restaurants for beachside dining is the Sunset Beach Bistro, which serves fresh local seafood and island specialties. Pastel-colored tables are placed right in the sand, under palm trees wrapped in white lights.
  • The casual, open-air Pure Beach restaurant next to the main pool area has a chic decor reminiscent of a Barcelona bar.
  • Guests can pick up gourmet goodies for their kitchens at the French Market and Deli (near the lobby).
  • 24-hour room service
  • For a special occasion, guests can dine at the romantic Windows on Aruba restaurant at the sister property Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort. The restaurant offers fantastic views over The Links 9-hole golf course and ocean beyond.

 Drinks

Daily happy hour specials at both bars make for a fun pre-dinner atmosphere

  • The Pure Beach and Sunset Beach Bistro bars offer a large selection of local and international drinks such as the Aruba Aruba, Chi- Chi, and Sex on the Beach. Happy hour specials are offered between 4 and 6 p.m.
  • Sunset Beach Bistro -- the resort's romantic restaurant -- has a full wine list, including bottles of champagne.
  • The Pure Beach bar has live music and a party atmosphere Sunday afternoons.
  • Guests can purchase wine from the French Market (directly off the lobby) to enjoy in the privacy of their hotel suites. In addition, room service is available to order drinks with dinner.

 Services

A nice range of extra services to please guests traveling for business or pleasure

  • Concierge service for island information, flight confirmation, babysitting services, and restaurant reservations
  • Island activities and transfers are offered through De Palm Tours. Their desk is located next to the concierge desk.
  • Car rental services through the Hertz desk, also located in the lobby
  • Laundry and dry cleaning service
  • Wi-Fi for a daily fee
  • The Phoenix Sundries shop for gifts, memorabilia and groceries

 Entertainment

Live music and movie nights

Sunset Beach Bistro has live romantic music during dinner, and Pure Beach offers karaoke nights as well as a live band every Sunday afternoon. Both new releases and old classics are played at outdoor movie nights; schedules vary depending on the season. The High-Rise location means easy access to plenty more entertainment options off-site.

 Golf

No golf on-site, but a 9-hole course nearby

There's no golf course on-site, but there's a 9-hole golf course at a sister property in the Low-Rise district, a five-minute drive down the road. Opened in October 2004, the Links is one of only two golf courses on the island (the other is an 18-hole course at Tierra del Sol, also near the hotel). This ocean-view course was designed by architects in Florida and offers play over water and landscaped lagoons for any level. Golfers also have use of a video golf swing analysis station, driving range area (in net), chipping area and bunker practice area.

Overlooking the course with scenic views is the clubhouse that offers two restaurant options: the casual open-air Mulligans Bar & Restaurant and the elegant Windows on Aruba for fine dining.

On the lower level of the clubhouse is the pro shop, which sells golf equipment and accessories, men's and women's logo apparel and other related merchandise and services, such as club repair and a re-gripping facility.

Instruction and lessons are provided by golf professionals from the Johnson & Wales Golf Academy. In addition, well-known PGA Member and Tour Coach, Donald Ross (with his unique FeelGolf School and swing method) is also based on-site.

Key facts:

  • Dress code for men and women requires collared shirts.
  • Carts are mandatory, and there are no caddies.
  • The longest tee is the Gold Tee, at 2,952 yards.
  • Ocean views and manmade lagoons
  • Paspalum grass
  • There are beverage stations after holes 3 and 6.

 Physical Activities

A sunlit fitness center, water sports, and tennis courts to help keep guests in shape

  • The big Pure Fitness Center offers modern cardiovascular equipment and weights in a bright space with floor-to-ceiling windows and ocean views. Guests are also allowed to use the fitness facilities at the other Divi properties.
  • Children's poolside activities during the week, as well as arranged beach walks -- great for families (there is also a beach power walk for adults).
  • An activities coordinator on-site to arrange island tours, snorkeling, and other water sports.
  • Two tennis courts on-site. In addition, players can participate in tennis clinics and lessons by professionals from Aruba Tennis (equipment provided) for a fee, off-site.
  • Bike rentals

 Casino

Plenty of casinos in the High-Rise district, plus a free shuttle to Divi's Alhambra Casino in the Low-Rise district.

There's no casino on-site, but there are a number to choose from in the High-Rise hotel district.

In addition, Divi's own Alhambra Casino in the Low-Rise district has over 350 slots, video poker machines and multi-game machines. Table games (only available in evenings) include blackjack, roulette and craps, and they come with low-limit offers. Transportation to the Alhambra Casino is free for guests.

 Business and Conventions

A ballroom for theater-style seating and Beach Tower suites for smaller groups

The Divi Aruba Phoenix, which stands a part from the rest of the Divi resorts, does offer meeting and convention space for groups. The attractive ballroom has dark wood-beamed ceiling and can accommodate up to 150 people theater-style, while small meetings (15-20 people) can be held in one of the Beach Tower suites. Catering services are available for both.

 Romance and Honeymoons

Couples may like the beachside restaurants and lighted pools

Though the Divi Aruba Phoenix welcomes families, business groups, and partygoers, the resort also manages to appeal to couples with its pretty setting along the ocean. There are plenty of attractive places to stroll, including the beach, the pier, and the winding walkways amid gardens and palms. In the evenings, Sunset Beach Bistro, located right on the sand, offers a romantic dining experience. All rooms have furnished balconies with partial or full ocean views (views are best from the higher floors).

A "Romance Package" includes a welcome set up with candles, rose petals, a chilled bottle of champagne, chocolate dipped fruits, and a romantic dinner for two at the Sunset Beach Bistro restaurant. Nightly turndown service and a daily buffet breakfast are also included.

Honeymooners are also popular here, especially in the summer months between May and August. Divi Aruba Phoenix features a "One Cool Honeymoon Program" where honeymooners receive a bottle of champagne and welcome souvenir upon arrival.

 Weddings

Beachside ceremonies and a ballroom for receptions

With a pretty beach setting and ballroom space, the resort is becoming an increasingly popular spot for that special day.

Divi's wedding planner "Aruba Weddings For You" can handle arrangements for all five Divi properties, including the Divi Aruba Phoenix. Their main office is located at the Tamarijn Aruba.

Most ceremonies take place along the beach, and receptions are usually held in the ballroom space, which can accommodate large groups. In addition, the event space above the Alhambra casino down the road can handle groups of up to 180 people. Both have catering capabilities. Guests can work with several wedding planners on the island. In addition, there is a banquet and events coordinator on-site to assist with preparations.

The resort's Pure Spa offers a variety of treatments, facials and manicures, and pedicures for the wedding party.

Basic wedding packages and free extras depend on how many rooms are reserved for the group.

Tier 1 Package (requires a minimum of 10 rooms):

  • Free Oceanview room for the bride and groom for seven nights
  • Bottle of champagne
  • Candlelight dinner for two

 Celebrity Sightings

The resort attracts international dignitaries and members of Aruba's parliament.

The Divi Aruba Phoenix has hosted important guests, mostly in politics, from Aruba and Latin America. Former visitors include the Minister of Justice, members of Aruba's parliament, consuls of Colombia, Venezuela and Dominican Republic, and embassy aides from Mexico and Guatemala. The resort also hosted Princess Laurentien and her family from The Netherlands during their official visit to the island.

 Eco-Friendly

The Divi Aruba Phoenix continues to implement new sustainable practices around the resort.

  • Rooms, public areas and restaurants are cleaned with eco-friendly sanitizing products.
  • Bathrooms use "Green" brand toiletries, but unlike other Divi resorts, these come in mini bottles.
  • Pest control is provided by a company that uses eco-friendly products.
  • Some herbs and fruits are grown locally for use by the restaurant kitchens.

 History

The Divi Aruba Phoenix is the most recent Divi property to open on the island.

Divi Resorts is a small group of Caribbean properties in Aruba, Bonaire, Barbados, St. Maarten and St. Croix. In 1969, Divi Aruba was the first Divi property to open on the island, and since then, the company has steadily expanded the brand with four additional properties, a 9-hole golf course, and a casino. Divi Aruba Phoenix is the most recent property, completed in 1995, and is the only one situated in the High-Rise district.

 Renovations and Upkeep

The Beach Tower has up-to-date decor

  • Divi Aruba Phoenix's original tower, built in 1995, is showing some age, but units have been updated with flat-screen TVs and duvets.
  • The newer Beach Tower has upgraded amenities including newer furnishings, granite countertop surfaces, stainless steel appliances and washer/dryer combinations.
  • The grounds and pool areas are attractive and well maintained. The beach is cleaned on a daily basis.

 Handicap

Both towers are serviced by elevators, and some rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Most public areas of Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort are wheelchair accessible. Though the resort is not fully A.D.A. compliant, there are a handful of units in the main tower and several in the beach tower that have some handicap accessible features, such as bathroom grab bars and wider bathroom doors.

 Safety

The resort has 24-hour security and is located next to the Beach Police headquarters.

Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort is located in the popular High-Rise hotel area, and the entire premise has 24-hour security. The resort is also situated next to the Beach Police headquarters.
