Bottom Line

Located 25 minutes northeast of Baltimore in the suburb of White Marsh, this 127-room chain hotel doesn’t have much personality, but it’s a popular budget choice among families and business travelers. Highlights include a heated outdoor pool, free breakfast buffet, and local shuttle service. The immediate area has a strip-mall feel, but it’s close to shops, corporate offices, and I-95. Those looking for more bells and whistles should consider the Hilton Garden Inn next door, which has an indoor pool and restaurant.

Hampton Inn Baltimore / White Marsh

Scene

A generic but comfortable chain hotel outside of Baltimore

Opened in 1997, this suburban chain hotel was the first inn built in White Marsh. From the outside, it looks like your standard Hampton Inn -- a beige and red brick building with the red Hampton Inn logo. The hotel is a bit too far outside Baltimore to appeal to city-goers, but a number of corporate offices are nearby, so business travelers are common. Families also flock here for the free breakfast buffet, heated outdoor pool, and affordable suites with sofa beds.

The spacious yellow-walled lobby was renovated in 2009 and features a mash-up of purple, green, and red furniture. When combined with the busy, red-patterned carpeting and cream tile floors, all the colors start to feel like overkill but the furniture is at least contemporary.

With no minibars, restaurant, or convenience store, there’s no food to be found at this Hampton Inn after breakfast time (other than the 24-hour coffee station in the lobby). Guests in search of food and drink can walk to the Hilton Garden Inn next door, which features and 24-hour sundry shop and a restaurant with limited hours.

Location

A 30-minuve drive from Baltimore in a suburban strip-mall neighborhood

Situated right off I-95, this suburban Hampton Inn is sandwiched between a shopping mall, a strip mall, an IKEA, and a movie theater. The concrete-filled White Marsh neighborhood is less than picturesque, but there are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Corporate offices, such as Comcast and MedStar, are also less than five minutes away.

  • 15-minute drive from Martin State Airport
  • 20-minute drive from Oriole Park at Camden Yards
  • 25-minute drive from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor

Rooms

Basic rooms and suites with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers

Renovated in 2014, the rooms feature the same red, green, yellow, and purple color scheme found in the lobby, and the wooden furniture is bland. They also lack mini-fridges and microwaves. On the plus side, the rooms are clean, fairly spacious, and include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and basic coffeemakers. Guests can choose from rooms with a king, queen, or two double beds. Suites with sofa beds are also available; some have mini-fridges. Both smoking and non-smoking options are available.

Features

Outdoor pool, fitness room, free breakfast buffet, and business center

The first floor is home to a modest fitness center (with only three cardio machines and some medicine balls), heated outdoor pool (open seasonally), a patio with a fire pit, business center, and guest laundry room. The lobby area also features a dining room where the buffet breakfast is served -- a full range of bacon, eggs, waffles, and pastries are available. Other perks include free parking, a free shuttle to nearby shops and businesses, free weekday newspapers, and “on the run” breakfast bags (weekdays only). In the summer the hotel hosts free Wednesday night barbecues with hamburgers, hotdogs, and snacks (Memorial Day through Labor Day).
