Bottom Line

The upscale, 116-room Alexandra Barcelona Hotel, part of the DoubleTree by Hilton chain, is ideally located for both business travelers and tourists, within walking distance of several Gaudi buildings and Las Ramblas. Set in a 19th-century building with a gorgeous classic facade, the minimalist interior is contemporary and stylish, in a soothing palate of beige and gray. Rooms are beautifully furnished with parquet floors, original woodwork effects, and luxury bathrooms with modern appliances. There is a small but attractive fitness center with attached sauna and massage room. Although the Alexandra is part of a chain, it feels special, unique, and very Spanish.

Alexandra Barcelona Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton

Scene

Cool and modern, with interesting design touches and huge windows for people-watching

The Alexandra Barcelona, a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel l is elegant but not stiff. Cool touches, like shelves of modern design books, make the space feel contemporary, but huge picture windows ensure the hotel also feels a part of the classic 19th century architecture outside. The lobby is sleek, with rich wood paneling, cushy sofas, plush rugs, and a bank of hanging globe lights that feel a bit magical. The front desk is designed with black damask wallpaper, artistically back-lit, which adds to the feeling that this is not just an ordinary chain hotel. Even the hallways to the guest rooms are done in black, which adds to the hotel's slightly edgy vibe, without sacrificing comfort and convenience. The hotel added a small outdoor pool and landscaped terrace in 2015, and a renovated restaurant and lobby bar opened in summer 2016.

Rooms

Smallish but lovely, with comfy beds, interesting artwork, and charming wrought iron balconies

Rooms at the Alexandra Barcelona are a bit small by American standards, but immaculate and stylish, with plenty of amenities, parquet floors or interesting rugs, and comfortable beds. Standard Rooms are narrow, but include inviting easy chairs and luxe bathrooms, with windows from showers into the main living area. Some higher category rooms have ceilings with fantastic rococo reliefs that have been highlighted with paint, as well as lovely photographs on the walls. Balconies are special, and worth the additional charge. Junior Suites have private, landscaped terraces with freestanding outdoor bathtubs.
