Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

Cons

  • Minimalist decor might feel too cold to some
  • Some small rooms
  • Street-facing rooms experience noise
  • Expensive breakfast is nothing special
  • Small fee for Wi-Fi

Bottom Line

The 147-room Grand Hotel Central is an upscale property located right on the border of the Gothic Quarter, within walking distance of major attractions and the subway. It is housed in a historic building dating back to 1926, but the interiors are thoroughly modern, with stylish, contemporary decor and up-to-date conveniences. Some rooms are small, but all come equipped with modern amenities, including Egyptian cotton linens, iPod docks, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have frosted glass sliding doors and feature Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, hydro-massage showers, and anti-steam mirrors. Chef Ramon Freixa, who has two Michelin stars, serves up creative Mediterranean cuisine at Avalon. But the must-see here is the gorgeous rooftop pool with infinity edge, bar service (open until late), and breathtaking panoramic views of Barcelona.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

Across the street from the historic Gothic Quarter, within walking distance of sights, restaurants, nightlife and shopping

The Grand Hotel Central’s location is ideal for exploring the city’s main attractions on foot. It sits right on the northeastern border of the beautiful Gothic Quarter, home to centuries-old churches, squares and buildings, as well as of great shopping, dining and nightlife. Via Laietana also offers easy access both by car and via public transportation to other parts of the city, including the new financial district, which makes this hotel a good pick for business travelers, too.

Sitting on top of the original Roman settlement, the Gothic Quarter is the center of the old city and one of the largest remaining "Gothic Quarters" in the world. It boasts tons of historic buildings, with everything from the remains of Augustus's ancient temple to Els Quatre Gats, the restored pub that served as a main meeting spot for Modernists at the turn of the century. But perhaps the most visually stunning buildings are the many cathedrals. This is one of the most popular neighborhoods among tourists, and there are tons of restaurants (many al fresco), high-end shops, and specialty shops with local favorite souvenirs such as fans and espadrilles.

  • 20-minute drive to El Prat International Airport
  • 2-minute walk to the Barcelona Cathedral
  • 5-minute walk to Picasso Museum
  • 9-minute walk to Plaça Catalunya, the heart of the city
  • 9-minute walk to La Rambla
  • 10-minute walk to Ciutadella park
  • 15-minute walk to Passeig de Gracia, home to La Pedrera and Casa Batllo, wonderful examples of unique Modernist architecture
  • 15-minute walk to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)
  • 21-minute walk to Barceloneta Beach and the waterfront
  • 14-minute subway ride to Sagrada Familia Cathedral
  • 31-minute subway ride to Güell park, designed by acclaimed Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi
