Bottom Line

This hotel, part of the Spanish HCC chain, has an extremely central location right by the Placa de Catalunya. It’s not the trendiest property, but the clean and basic accommodations, plus a piano bar and small outdoor pool, make the hotel a great value for the area.

Oyster Hotel Review

HCC Montblanc

Scene

Basic property in a central location

The hotel's lobby doesn't have the liveliest vibe. Its straightforward interiors (from the bland carpeting to the public area couches) could use a refresh. Some colorful touches, such as the vibrant Gaudi-inspired mosaics off the lobby, do brighten up the property with a bit more personality. The breakfast room is cheerful, with a panel of blue and yellow stained glass. But the hotel's biggest perk is its location, which is just a short walk from Placa de Catalunya, which attracts a mix of business travelers and families.

Location

In the Gothic Quarter, on a busy street by the Placa de Catalunya

The hotel sits on Via Laietana, a major thoroughfare in the center of Barcelona, which means there are plenty of conveniences (including restaurants) nearby. It's a five-minute walk to the Placa de Catalunya and 15 minutes to La Rambla. The waterfront Maremagnum shopping center is about 25 minutes on foot. Visitors can take a bus or subway, both of which stop very close to the property, for 10 to 15 minutes to the Sagrada Familia.

Rooms

Clean and basic, some with terraces

The hotel has 157 spacious rooms that are basic but clean. Decor includes wide wooden headboards, beige throws and light-colored hardwood floors. The rooms come with flat-screen TVs and minibars; there is an annoying fee to use the safes. Coffee/tea facilities are absent. The fairly spacious bathrooms have wide counters and mirrors, curtained shower/tub combos and hairdryers. Some rooms come with Astroturf-covered terraces.

Features

Small pool, piano bar, and buffet breakfast

The small outdoor pool is surrounded by some lounge chairs, tables and umbrellas, and is a place to cool off after a day of sightseeing, especially during the hot Barcelona summers. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, and there is live piano music in the evenings. A buffet breakfast, sometimes included in the room rate, is served in a large, bright room. Hot food is ordered separately and there is often a wait for it. The hotel also has a basic meeting/function room.
