Bottom Line

The Hotel HCC Open is a mid-range hotel in the Eixample neighborhood, within walking distance of the metro and many of Barcelona’s major landmarks. Overall, this isn’t the most stylish hotel, but business travelers and tourists looking for a decent place to rest after long days of sightseeing or business meetings can find solid, if barebones, accommodations here. The 100 rooms are basic and have generic decor, but they're quiet and well-maintained. Amra Barcelona Gran Via is a good alternative for those looking for more contemporary rooms in the Eixample. It offers fresh design elements and a more intimate, boutique vibe,  often at a lower price point.

Leonardo Hotel Barcelona Gran Via

Scene

Modern building with sparse, functional atmosphere

The HCC is housed in a modern building wedged between historic Eixample architecture, and though its generic and simple look isn't particularly impressive, it's a perfectly decent place to spend a few nights. The lobby is bright and spacious, with light tiled floors, green marble accents, and not particularly inviting rattan seating. A few potted plants add life to the space. A bright marble-topped bar just off the lobby is a far more inviting place to relax, with several comfortable, contemporary chairs and a love seat, all arranged around marble cocktail tables. The breakfast space that opens off of the bar area is also bright, though it doesn’t seem like somewhere guests would want to linger. The hotel sees mostly tourists, including couples and families, although some business guests are drawn to its central location.

Location

Quiet yet central Eixample location near shopping, restaurants, and bars

Barcelona’s Eixample is a sprawling residential district filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and nightlife, though the immediate area around the hotel is exceptionally quiet. Casa Batllo -- one of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces -- is about 20 minutes away from the hotel on foot, just off the upscale shop-lined Passeig de Gracia. Two metro stations -- Rocafort and Urgell -- are a five-minute walk from the hotel, with trains reaching central landmarks like Plaza Catalunya in less than 10 minutes (alternatively, the walk takes around 20 minutes). MACBA -- Barcelona’s contemporary art museum -- and the bohemian El Raval neighborhood in Barcelona’s Old City can both be reached in 15 minutes on foot. El Prat International Airport is less than 40 minutes away using the Aerobus, while the same trip takes about 20 minutes in a taxi.

Rooms

Basic rooms with slightly dated vibe and en-suite bathrooms

Guest rooms are spacious and clean, just don’t expect the most sleek and stylish lodgings here. Despite being a relatively new property, the generic design scheme feels lifted from the 1990s. Pink-and-red paisley carpets line the floors and the dark-wood headboards and cheap-looking modern furniture contribute to the overall generic, dated vibe. However, rates are low and rooms are quiet, with minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs. Comfortable beds have striped motel-style comforters instead of duvets. Note the double beds are simply two twins pushed-together. Bathrooms are clean and simple, with faux-marble vanities, tiled floors, and shower/tub combos.

Features

Breakfast buffet, cozy on-site bar, two meeting rooms, but no on-site restaurant

The HCC serves a decent buffet breakfast with hot and cold options, though it's not included in most room rates, and it's expensive compared to the many cafes or pastry shops serving breakfast in the surrounding neighborhood. The on-site bar off the lobby is a fine place to relax and enjoy a drink or grab an afternoon coffee before heading back out into the city. There's no on-site restaurant, but room service is available during limited hours.

The hotel also has two carpeted meeting rooms, one of which has windows that let in some natural light. Audiovisual equipment can be arranged upon request. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there are free newspapers in the lobby. Dry cleaning, laundry services, and some concierge services can be arranged through the front desk.
