Bottom Line

The mid-range, 91-room Hotel HCC St. Moritz is housed in a lovely 19th-century building in the central Eixample neighborhood, near sights and public transportation. Unfortunately, the hotel's interior spaces don't match the elegance of its facade. The restaurant and bar are a bit drab and chain-like , and the generic vibe continues in the guest rooms, which seem caught between modern and dated. Additionally, bathrooms are on the small side and no kettles are provided. Still, rooms are spacious and outfitted with flat-screen TVs, safes, and hairdryers. A restaurant serving a breakfast buffet (fee) and free Wi-Fi are definite pluses, but it's the hotel's central location that's the main draw. The nearby and similarly priced Hotel Vueling BCN by Hc is an upscale pick with a small outdoor pool, gym, and more attractive rooms.

HCC St. Moritz

Scene

A bit corporate, with a vibe caught between traditional and modern

The hotel's elegant, well-maintained facade hints at the building's 1883 origins, and it opens up into an expansive lobby that veers from classic design (lots of peach and gold tones) to modern (a dark wood-paneled seating area with contemporary furniture) quite abruptly. The vibe in the common areas remains caught between classical elegance and business throughout, but decor is largely generic and underwhelming. Renovations in 2017 did chance out carpeting and linens, but the updated patterned fabrics are still dated. The extremely central, convenient location helps to draw travelers who are either traveling on business or are a quieter, more mature tourist.

Location

Just off the Passeig de Gracia in the lovely Eixample district

Situated just off the Passeig de Gracia, the HCC St. Moritz is in a great spot for shopping and sightseeing. The hotel is within walking distance of the modernist landmarks Casa Milà and Casa Batlló. These eye-catching buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí currently function as museums that can be explored inside and out. This district is known for a vibrant nightlife scene, with many trendy bars and clubs found here, especially in the gay section (which is popularly known as Gayxample). In addition, the Passeig de Gracia metro station is just two blocks away from the hotel, which makes exploring other parts of the city fairly easy.

  • 20-minute drive from Barcelona El Prat Airport
  • Four-minute walk to whimsical Casa Batlló, a former home-turned-museum designed by Antoni Gaudí
  • 13-minute walk to the quirky Casa Milá (La Pedrera) building designed by Antoni Gaudí
  • 14-minute walk to Passeig de Gràcia for high-end shopping and dining
  • Six-minute drive to Antoni Gaudí's famously eye-catching Sagrada Família church
  • Eight-minute drive to Mercat de la Boqueria public market for shopping
  • Eight-minute drive to El Tablao de Carmen for flamenco dancing
  • Eight-minute drive to nightlife of El Born
  • 10-minute drive to the Port of Barcelona
  • 10-minute drive to the Barri Gótic (Gothic Quarter) for medieval architecture
  • 13-minute drive to the Camp Nou (FC Barcelona) soccer stadium
  • 14-minute drive to Monestir de Pedralbes, a former monastery that is now a museum
  • 25-minute drive to Collserola Park
  • 27-minute drive to Tibidabo for panoramic views of the city and the coastline

Rooms

Confusingly, decor is both modern and dated

Rooms are modern in terms of amenities and furniture, but linens and carpet in a color scheme relying heavily on browns, golds, and burgundies make units look dated. Expect contemporary dark-wood furniture with silver accents and cream leather quilted headboards, as well as gold armchairs with burgundy squiggly lines, wavy-print burgundy carpet, and two-tone drapes with leaf motifs. Each guest room comes with a desk, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, free in-room safe, minibar, and free Wi-Fi. Guests needing an iron and ironing board will need to call down to reception for them. Note that tea- and coffee-making facilities are not provided. Bathrooms are small and done in tan, with cobalt counters and equally blue tile on the floors. They have shower/tub combos, hotel-brand toiletries, robes, slippers, and hose-style hairdryers -- conveniently, guests can request a high-powered hairdryer from reception.

Features

Don't expect atmosphere in the bar or restaurant

The Hotel HCC St. Moritz lacks wellness and facilities facilities, but one of its most popular features is the "Wine & Gin and Tonic Corner," a bar with excellent drinks and simple tapas (great for a pre-dinner snack) served until late. Guests can take them outside on a pleasant indoor/outdoor terrace with contemporary wicker furniture.

For full meals, the St. Gallen restaurant specializes in classic Mediterranean and Catalan dishes with a modern twist, but don't expect much atmosphere in this generic, carpeted dining room (or in the bar area for that matter). The breakfast buffet is included in some room rates, although most agree it's not worth paying extra for as it's good but standard continental fare, though cava is complimentary.

Three meeting rooms are available for business travelers to use and property-wide Wi-Fi is free.
