In an unremarkable location in East Berlin, far from most attractions
The Grand City Hotel Globus Berlin is located in a non-descript area of East Berlin, but it's clean and safe with multiple S-Bahn and U-Bahn stops near the hotel. Rates are low as a result of the remote location: Central Berlin is about a 25 to 30 minute subway ride away, so having a car really helps. However, trains in Berlin run 24 hours, allowing guests to return without splurging for a cab. There are few restaurants and practically no nightlife nearby, but there are two grocery stores across the street that help guests to stay within a budget. While it's not very close to the city center, it is relatively close to the chic neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg.
The Grand City Hotel Globus Berlin is part of a budget hotel chain. Each of the 241 rooms has dorm-like decor and old tube TVs. Function over design is the philosophy here, resulting in a generic lobby and rooms that are adequate and comfortable. Perks include a small gym and sauna, a summer garden, and an on-site bar, but the location is far from central Berlin. Low prices attract budget travelers to this tidy property, but there's a pesky fee for Wi-Fi and there are some complaints about thin walls.
