Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators.

Pros

  • Convenient location four blocks from the Boston Common and two blocks from the Theater District
  • Spacious bathrooms
  • Free guest access to adjacent YMCA's Olympic-size pool and fitness center
  • Business center has two computers, free Internet, two printers, and a television
  • MP3-enabled alarm clock and radio
  • Free USA Today each weekday morning

Cons

  • $9.95-per-day Wi-Fi, and the connection was still slow
  • Some spots and stains on the carpet
  • Bland furniture and outdated electronics (like the Philips 26-inch tube TV, with cable and pay-per-view movies)

Bottom Line

The most persuasive argument in favor of the Doubletree is it's downtown location just blocks from Boston's Theater District and the Boston Common. But everything from the decor to the televisions to the upkeep is lackluster or worse. Better, comparably priced options include the 98-room budget boutique Harborside, which is light on amenities but clean, comfortable, and quiet.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

Little more than a place to sleep for those visiting downtown Boston, the Doubletree usually meets but never exceeds basic expectations.

Standard room
Standard room

The Doubletree is an affordable, no-frills hotel -- a good-enough one of its type, and just fine for frugal travelers who plan to spend their time out and about in Boston. And its location is convenient to many of the city's top attractions. But if you're looking for anything beyond a safe, fairly clean home base, the Doubletree is likely to disappoint.

It's rooms are relatively spacious and get a lot of natural light. But they're sparsley furnished and drab; and the bathrooms have only shower stalls, no tubs. The lobby restaurant, Wisteria Restaurant and Bar, doesn't add anything to the mix. Service is minimal -- nobody is available to help with your bags, for example. (On the other hand, the concierge was knowledgeable and patient, suggesting several area options when I asked where to get a decent steak. And he was frank about how expensive some of the restaurants were, which was very much appreciated.)

In the end, there are several better choices in the price range. The Courtyard by Marriott Boston in Copley Square, while similarly short on services, has up-to-date in-room electronics, free wired Internet, and is housed in a beautiful old building in the more charming Back Bay neighborhood. Or try the 98-room Harborside Inn, a downtown budget boutique that's light on amenities but clean, comfortable, and quiet.

 Location

A few blocks from Boston's Theater District and the Boston Common

The Doubletree's downtown location is within easy walking distance of Boston's Theater District, the Boston Common, Chinatown, and plenty of dining and shopping options.

  • Across the street from Tufts New England Medical Center
  • Five-minute walk to the Chinatown station of the T, Boston's subway system
  • Five- to 10-minute drive to Faneuil Hall
  • Four blocks from the Boston Common and the start of the Freedom Trail
  • 10-minute drive to Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox
  • 15- to 20-minute drive to shopping and dining options in Harvard Square, and Harvard University
  • 20- to 25-minute drive to Logan International Airport; cab fare about $40
