Bottom Line

Standing right on the water in Boston's business district, The Seaport Hotel is a modern, affordable three-and-a-half pearl property that is a favorite among business travelers for good reason. The hotel's no-tipping policy, eco-friendly efforts, and a floor of hypoallergenic PURE rooms differentiates the hotel from its comparably-priced competition—like the Westin Boston Waterfront. With big harbor-facing rooms, top-notch amenities (including a stellar gym), and generally lower rates than the nearby Boston Renaissance Hotel, the Seaport offers an understated luxury that’s hard to beat.

Oyster Hotel Review

Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center

Scene

Contemporary design, big business hotel with boutique feel

Despite 426 rooms and a wide, bustling lobby, the Seaport Hotel seems to give off the air of a small boutique property. Maybe it’s the toy chest for kids to rummage through in the lobby, cozy fireplace, or the piano tucked away in a corner that give this place its surprising charm. It likely also has to do with 2015 renovations that added oomph to an already contemporary design: soft cream hues complement dark wooden furniture and gold lighting throughout the space, with bold and bright artwork in the halls and rooms keeping the decor from straying into blandness.

The hotel is just across the harbor from Logan International Airport, and next to the Boston Convention Center. As such, the place tends to attract a large and diverse group of professionals, who might congregate at the expansive TAMO Bistro and Bar, or make use of the free Wi-Fi at one of the numerous lounge seats. A few unique features help this property stand out from other business hotels in the city, including a no-tipping policy, strong eco-friendly focus, and a floor of hypoallergenic rooms, aptly called PURE.

Location

Close to airport and Boston Convention center, on the waterfront, ideal for business travelers

The Seaport Hotel is located at Seaport Place, right in the heart of Boston’s waterfront district. It’s an up-and-coming business district that is home to a number of offices, residential condos, as well as bars and restaurants, many of which are within walking distance. Seafood is the standard fare, though the North End is a 10-minute taxi drive away and offers a range between fancy Italian dishes and cheap pizza to fit most budgets. The rapid development in the area means that there is perpetual construction happening here; fortunately this does little to mar the pretty sights of the pier.

Close to the airport, a five to 10-minute walk to the Boston Convention Center, and 30 seconds from the World Trade Center T-Station, the Seaport Hotel is ideal for business travelers. While there aren’t a lot of tourist attractions nearby, for those who don’t mind walking—the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and the Children’s Museum are within 5 to 10 minutes of the hotel. Faneuil Hall, Boston Common, and Quincy Market are only a few stops away on the T.

  • A 10-minute walk to the Boston Convention Center
  • Five blocks from the Institute of Contemporary Art
  • The nearest stop on the T (Boston's subway system) is Silver Line Way station on the Silver Line, one block from the hotel
  • The Silver Line runs directly to Logan International Airport. Getting from the airport to the hotel on the Silver Line T takes less than 20 minutes.
  • A taxi from the airport takes 10 to 15 minutes
  • South Street Station is a five-minute cab ride from the hotel.
  • Faneuil Hall is 20 to 25 minutes away via public transportation.
  • The Boston Common and the start of the Freedom Trail is 15 to 20 minutes away via public transportation.
  • A 15-minute cab ride or 45 minutes on public transportation to Fenway Park
  • Harvard Square is about a half-hour away via public transportation

Rooms

Cheery, thoughtfully designed, many with lovely harbor views

The rooms here are large and cheery, and most on the upper levels have a lovely view of the harbor. An impeccable standard of cleanliness is immediately noticeable, but it’s the thoughtful design touches that go a long way, like master switches at the doors, built-in reading lamps, and charging stations at bedside tables. Soft terry bathrobes, marble bathrooms with Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, crisp bed sheets, and almost-silent AC units add to the serene luxury.

Rooms come furnished with modern amenities, including flat-screen HDTVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and BOSE speakers—but no minibars and overall the furniture and bedspreads are a bit dated and dull. PURE rooms are a bit pricier but are certified 99.6 percent allergen-free, and otherwise identical to the standard guest rooms. There are also a number of suites varying in both size and selection of amenities (some have heated floors in the bathrooms), though all share stunning views of the city and waterfront.

Features

State-of-the-art WAVE gym with spa services, modern business center, and a casual restaurant and bar

The highlight of this hotel is undoubtedly its state-of-the-art WAVE fitness center, whose value is perhaps indicated by the locals who frequent it along with hotel guests. This also means that the popular gym, while large, can get crowded, especially during early morning or early evening peak hours. Guests can choose from bike rentals, group fitness classes, every cardio and weight machine imaginable, and multiple kinds of free weights. The heated lap pool is just next door and, like the gym, has floor-to-ceiling windows that keep it sunny and bright all day long. Added perks include a steam room and spa services.

For breakfast, diners can choose from a buffet-style meal or order off the varied breakfast menu at Aura Restaurant for a fee. TAMO Bar across the hall is a bit more casual and serves an American lunch and dinner, and has an interesting cocktail list. Even simpler, the Seaport Cafe sells grab-and-go baked goods and sandwiches, along with Starbucks coffee.

The business center is modern and well-equipped with a copy machine and color printers, as well as a conference room for 8.  Guests can print from their rooms and pick up at the center, or choose to have printouts delivered to their rooms.
