Bottom Line

The 1828 Smart Hotel is a sleek and modern retreat in the trendy Palermo Soho neighborhood, an area known for its cool restaurants and shopping. This four-pearl property has 14 sumptuous rooms with a host of amenities that are controlled by a tablet that guests receive at check-in -- a fun detail for some, though it might be a nuisance for others. Balconies overlook the small outdoor pool and garden, and some even have outdoor whirlpools. Spa services are available on-site in a private treatment room and the wellness area includes a small fitness room and a sizable sauna. Travelers seeking something in the Palermo district might want to compare rates with the Glu Hotel and the Hotel Bys Palermo, both four-pearl properties with contemporary design.

1828 Smart Hotel

Scene

Leather, marble, and stainless steel deliver slick, modern glamour in this upscale hotel

The 1828 Smart Hotel in the Palermo district is indeed smart, with guests receiving tablets upon check-in that control an array of in-room features. A sleek, frosted glass facade makes way to modern and sexy interiors, with white marble floors and luxurious finishes at every turn. The black, white, and silver color scheme as well as gleaming surfaces give the lobby a chic and polished look, as does the white grand piano situated beneath an opulent chandelier in the lounge and a few stylish armchairs accenting the area. None of the common areas are especially large, but the overall look is stylish, and the spaces can accommodate plenty of guests without feeling cramped.

Location

Located in the artsy and trendy Palermo neighborhood

The 1828 Smart Hotel sits on a residential street in the trendy Palermo district. The building is a bit of an oddity because it's so modern and new, while neighboring real estate is old and covered with graffiti. Palermo is known for its nightlife, trendy shops, and cool cafes. The top-rated Don Julio restaurant is less than 10 minutes away on foot. Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays is about 10 minutes away by car and houses Monumento a España and Museo Municipal Eduardo Sivori. The huge natural preserve also has a zoo and planetarium. Museo Evita which details the life of Evita Peron is across the street from the gardens. Buenos Aires International Airport is about a 30-minute drive away.

Each spacious room is bathed in white, from the walls to the the linens and accessories. The dark flooring provides a slick contrast and the overall look can be described as modern glamour. It’s all about smart tech here, so the lighting, TV, music, and many other functions and services are controlled by tablets that guests receive at check-in. The experience is totally customizable, even down to the fragrance of the room. Other conveniences include iPod docks, minibars, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Beautiful white marble bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers, sleek and modern vanities and sinks, bidets, and high-end toiletries, while huge mirrors maximize the rather small spaces. All rooms have private balconies, but the larger suites also have outdoor whirlpools. This lavish addition is tucked behind frosted glass for privacy.

Features

Small, but stylish outdoor pool, fitness center, and spa, plus piano lounge and breakfast (for a fee)

The defining feature of this property is its “smart” capability that allows guests to control nearly every electronic convenience in their room from a mobile device received at check-in. Travelers who are really into tech will love this feature, though it might be a turnoff for some. A sumptuous breakfast is served daily (for a fee), and Kosher options are available. Guests dine in a bright, beautiful lounge overlooking the pool and garden. Some evenings, there's live entertainment at the piano. The outdoor space is petite, but beautifully executed; everything from the foliage to the cascading “pool mirror” reflects the hotel’s sophisticated style. The spa area consists of a treatment room, sauna, and a small fitness room with a few cardio machines. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
