A couples retreat in family-friendly Puerto Aventuras
The Aventura Spa Palace is located in Puerto Aventuras, a small resort community in between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum (both are about a 40-minute drive away).
Puerto Aventuras is home to a large marina, a golf course, and white-sand beaches where activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, swimming with the dolphins, and fishing are all popular pastimes. Although the hotel is geared toward couples, Puerto Aventuras is known as a family-friendly destination -- a small town with nice shops and restaurants but few lively bars. Those looking for a more wild Cancun experience may consider staying in the Hotel Zone.
The 777-room Aventura Spa Palace is an all-inclusive mega-resort in family-friendly Puerto Aventuras. The hotel -- a step above most all-inclusives, with four good restaurants and four pools -- is a quiet, adults-only retreat. (The Cove Palace next door is the family-friendly option). Spread across 85 acres, the Aventura features a massive, beautiful spa, a large fitness center, tennis courts, a rock climbing wall, and modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, marble bathrooms, and sexy Jacuzzi tubs in the center of the room. One downside is that the hotel does not have standard beach access -- sandy lagoons are protected by rock formations from the rough surf -- but access to other Palace resorts beaches, such as the Playacar Palace in Playa Del Carmen, is free.
