Bottom Line

This 97-room all-inclusive resort feels more like an upscale beach community -- complete with thatched roofs and quaint seaside cabanas. Rooms are spacious, with airy island-style designs and lots of luxurious touches, like deep-dish sinks, flat-screen TVs, and private patios or balconies. Some suites are swim-up, which border the gorgeous pool linking a group of suites at ground level. The four on-site restaurants offer a decent variety to guests, including a bar dedicated solely to tequila, though those staying for more than an extended weekend may find the options a bit limited. But families will appreciate that the restaurants offer kid-friendly options, and the daily kids' club -- a bright, fun space with tons of games and toys -- is a great place for children to hang out while adults dine or visit the spa.

Azul Beach Resort Riviera Maya

Location

Quiet and secluded, on a private beach that's about a 30-minute drive to downtown Cancun

Located on a gorgeous beach about 20 minutes south of Cancun, the nearby area offers the beach, the beach, and the beach. Virtually nothing else is within walking distance, but a shuttle or taxi carts guests to and from Cancun fairly regularly. The nearby Puerto Morelos, about a 15-minute drive, offers some excellent snorkeling and beaches, which are very pristine, quiet, and preserved -- a rarity in this bustling tourist locale.

Although the hotel is in one of the remote areas of the peninsula, thousands of spring breakers, honeymooners, families and travelers of all ages flow into the Cancun area every year, making it one of the world's top beach destinations. Its turquoise waters, beautiful stretches of sand, and night-long parties are a main draw here, but there's a lot to do besides going to the beach. Cancun is the gateway to the breathtaking Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum (Coba is also nearby, but is less well-preserved). Even for those planning to spend most of their time in a lounge chair, these centuries-old archaeological sites are well worth a visit.

  • 20-minute drive to Cancun International Airport
  • 15-minute drive to Puerto Morelos, with quiet beaches and great snorkeling options
  • 30-minute drive to downtown Cancun (Ciudad Cancun)
  • 35-minute drive to Playa del Carmen, a laid-back and bustling town with great shopping, and a well-heeled crowd
  • 35-minute drive to Tulum Mayan ruins
