On a small white-sand beach in the middle of the Hotel Zone, but a good drive from downtown Cancun
Along a small, beautiful beach near the middle of the Hotel Zone, the Barcelo Tucancun is equidistance from the airport and downtown Cancun -- about a 25-minute drive. It is a great spot for those who want to be in the center of the lively Hotel Zone, and close to shops at La Isla, a modern shopping center.
The Zona Hotelera (or Hotel Zone) is the mega-resort, mega-mall area in Isla Cancun that caters to mass tourism. The nightlife is one of its main draws, as are its shops and restaurants -- but there's little of Cancun's original flavor here. To get a hint of what that is, you'll have to take a cab to Ciudad Cancun, the real downtown, where smaller, better restaurants, local shops, and quieter bars are located.
The 334-room all-inclusive Barcelo Tucancun Beach may not be the most luxurious or stunning hotel in Cancun, but it offers clean facilities, average buffets, convenient in-room amenities, and a pretty beach -- all at one of the more affordable rates in the area. Although the main pool can get a bit crowded and rowdy, several of the smaller pools offer some peace. Rooms (and the entire hotel, for that matter) need updates; there are old tube TVs, dated bedspreads and furnishings, and out-of-place iron gates separating the bathroom area. On the upside, they're clean and spacious, with mini-fridges and coffeemakers, and the sea view rooms have great views of the Caribbean's cerulean waters.
