Bottom Line

The 27-room Mia Cancun sits on the white-sand beach of the Hotel Zone. The terracotta and wood-beamed rooms are pretty typical -- most feature old tube TVs, furniture is sparse, and the only "flair" is thin floral comforters on the hard beds. But aside from some street noise in street-facing rooms, the hotel is a relaxing alternative to the mega-hotels that line the beach; the beachfront pristine pool with ocean views is not teeming with kids or underage partiers and the restaurants serve up nice affordable meals.

Oyster Hotel Review

Mia Cancun

Location

On the beach, at the southern end of the Hotel Zone

The Mia Cancun is directly on the beach near the southern tip of the Hotel Zone, an easy drive to the airport. It is a great spot for those who want a beautiful, half-empty beach but aren't seeking a real Cancun experience -- restaurants (aside from US chains like Chili's and Outback Steakhouse), shops and the world-famous Cancun nightlife are farther north. Also, it is about a half-hour cab ride from Ciudad Cancun, where locals live and play, so be ready to take a taxi or the bus every time you want to venture in that direction.

The Zona Hotelera (or Hotel Zone) is the mega-resort, mega-mall area in Isla Cancun that caters to mass tourism. The cheesy nightlife is one of its main draws, as are its brand-name shops and restaurants -- but there's little of Cancun's original flavor here. To get a hint of what that is, you'll have to take a cab to Ciudad Cancun, the real downtown, where smaller, better restaurants, local shops, and quieter bars are located.

  • 28-minute drive to Cancun International Airport
  • 3-minute walk to the Flamingo Shopping Center
  • 7-minute walk to the Isla Shopping Center
  • 25-minute drive to downtown Cancun (Ciudad Cancun)
  • 45-minute drive to Puerto Morelos, with quiet beaches and great snorkeling spots
  • 1-hour drive to Playa del Carmen, a laid-back and bustling town with great shopping, and a well-heeled crowd
  • 1-hour and 45-minute drive to Tulum Mayan ruins
