Bottom Line

Looking out on the Italian Adriatic from the beach town of Cesenatico, the upper-middle-range Hotel Caesar is a family-run hotel set in a 1970s-style resort tower. Despite its large feel and extensive amenities – it has a relatively modest 51 rooms and features include three heated pools, a surprisingly excellent restaurant, children's play areas and activities, free breakfast, and the beach across the street – the hotel maintains a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks especially to a proprietor who goes out of his way to befriend guests. Rooms are simple and feel like they perhaps haven't changed in style since the hotel was built, but they are notably clean, and many have ocean views and private balconies. For the location and atmosphere, the price offers a good value.

Hotel Caesar

Scene

Oceanfront, family-aimed beach hotel

A retro beach hotel in a popular Italian seaside town, Hotel Caesar primarily attracts families, thanks to its extensive child-friendly facilities, as well as couples and groups of friends looking for a low-key beach vacation. The pool area can get busy during the day, though the beach is also just across the street and the hotel provides beach towels for those who want to dip their toes in the Adriatic. During dinner, in the popular restaurant, the hotel's owner, Mauro, makes his way around and chats with guests. The low-frills lobby is set with dated looking chairs and small tables next to an aquarium. A lending library nearby adds a homey touch. Marble stairs lead up to the second floor where the kids' club is located.

Location

Overlooking a beach on the Adriatic, not far from the center of Cesenatico

With the beach and the Adriatic Sea just across the street, Hotel Caesar couldn't be better situated for a seaside vacation. The center of Cesenatico is a bit further away, but the hotel has a free shuttle bus that picks up guests right out front and drives to where the restaurants, shops, and nightlife are. The closest major international airport is in Bologna, a little under an hour-and-a-half's drive away.

Rooms

Clean and with ocean views, if dated

The 51 rooms in this retro resort tower are clean and simple, though the decor seems to suggest that the style hasn't been updated in several decades, with pastel colors and wood-laminate furniture. Triple rooms look crowded with an extra twin bed next to the double. Flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges with free water are a nice touch. The bathrooms show a little more wear but are still very clean, and have stall showers and (dated) hairdryers. Many rooms have ocean views and private balconies. A plate of fresh fruit greets guests upon arrival.

Features

Full-service hotel with three pools, restaurant, free breakfast, and bicycles to borrow

In addition to being located directly across the street from the beach and the Adriatic, the hotel has three heated outdoor pools open to guests year-round: one large pool, one kids' pool, and one raised whirlpool. There's also a children's play area on the pool deck, as well as a play room inside, and the restaurant often provides entertainment for children during meals. A small gym -- somewhat gaudy with mirrors and red paint -- is located next door, along with a small sauna room. The restaurant serves notably fresh and delicious homemade cuisine, breakfast is included, and guests on either full- or partial-board receive an afternoon snack in addition to meals; the restaurant also has an outdoor patio area. The hotel has a roof sun-deck, bicycles to borrow, free Wi-Fi, and a 24-hour concierge desk.
