Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Rooms have a stately feel with dark woods, turned-leg furnishings, and billowy drapery
  • Large flat-screen TVs and Wolfgang Puck coffeemakers and coffee
  • Bathrooms are large with marble vanities
  • Basement fitness center has several machines and free weights
  • Grand lobby with chandeliers, columns, and arched windows
  • Small, quiet courtyard with a fountain and several benches
  • One on-site restaurant, and within walking distance of many others

Cons

  • Rooms are on the smaller side
  • No mini-fridges in standard rooms
  • Valet parking only
  • Daily fee for Wi-Fi (free Wi-Fi in the lobby)

Bottom Line

The Doubletree by Hilton features rooms outfitted in golds, reds, and greens, with dark wood accents and draped curtains. Some may find the decor somewhat dated and stuffy, but the hotel has a more luxurious feel than other chain hotels, especially in the lobby, which is bedecked with chandeliers and high archways. The basement fitness center and the quiet courtyard are nice features, and the historic downtown location is a highlight, but families may want to consider the nearby Embassy Suites, which has a pool and free Wi-Fi.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

In Historic Downtown, a short walk from the vibrant Charleston City Market

Though a bit less centrally located than some other historic downtown hotels, the Doubletree is just a short walk from the Charleston City Market, home to numerous craft stands, and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Other attractions like the College of Charleston and the Charleston Museum are within walking distance (about 15 minutes), but some may prefer to drive.

Historic Downtown is known for its beautiful 18th-century architecture, numerous museums, and great shopping, and restaurants. King Street is the main drag, with high-end restaurants, art galleries, and shops.

  • 19-minute drive to Charleston International Airport
  • 3-minute walk to Charleston City Market
  • 6-minute walk to the Gibbes Museum of Art
  • 7-minute walk to King Street
  • 12-minute walk to Marion Square
  • 13-minute walk to the harbor and maritime park
  • 15-minute walk to College of Charleston
  • 15-minute walk to the Charleston Museum, the oldest museum in the US
  • 16-minute walk to Aiken-Rhett House, the former governor's home built in 1818
  • 4-minute drive to South Carolina Aquarium
