Bottom Line

Milestone House is a budget-friendly B&B overlooking scenic Dingle Bay in County Kerry. Guests always receive a warm welcome on arrival and a delicious breakfast every morning -- though other meals require a 20-minute walk or a drive into town. Rooms are clean and simple with ensuite bathrooms and basic amenities, though excellent views both from front and back. While not as polished as some similar nearby properties, the Milestone House is home to two wonderful hosts. For a more upscale experience, check out the Castlewood House nearer to town.

Milestone House

Scene

This couple-run B&B offers a warm welcome and a cool ancient standing stone in the garden -- but little else.

Occupying a two-story building typical of the area, Milestone House looks little different from Dingle Bay's many other budget-friendly B&Bs. Passing between a cluster of potted plants and a pair of neo-classical columns, guests are welcomed by owners Michael and Barbara Carroll, who make every effort to make new arrivals feel immediately at home. This is certainly helped by the particularly homey aspect of the guesthouse, most of which looks and feel like a regular family residence -- if a bit of a simple one. The property is surrounded by a pleasant garden with tidy lawns and features a four-thousand-year-old, six-foot-tall standing stone, Gallán na Cille Brice, that lines up with a nearby mountain peak and another standing stone in an adjoining field. Guests are mostly vacation couples, although the Milestone is one of the more popular picks in the area for families, considering its various room types.

Location

Overlooking Dingle Bay, about a mile from town in the scenic county of Kerry

Milestone House is located on a quiet country road -- Slea Head Drive -- that connects Dingle to Ventry in the Irish country of Kerry. The house is immediately surrounded by fields and farmlands, and has spectacular views of Dingle Bay to the front and uninterrupted views of Mount Brandon to the rear. Dingle town, with plenty of restaurants and lively pubs, is a 20-minute stroll away or five minutes by car. Dingle Distillery is also just a few minutes' walk away, where visitors can have tastings of Dingle Whiskey, Dingle Gin, and Dingle Vodka. There's also plenty of local walking trails through some of the country's most scenic landscapes.

Rooms

Clean and comfortable with ensuite bathrooms and bay or mountain views

The guesthouse has just five rooms, all of which are clean and comfortable, if incredibly simple: picture Ikea-esque blond wood furniture and carpeted floors. Amenities are basic, with small flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and free (though slow) Wi-Fi. Although filtered water is provided, there are no in-room tea/coffee facilities. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms with step-in showers or shower/tub combos and simple toiletries. Unusually for a B&B, they have a family room setup that can accommodate up to six people.  Rooms at the front overlook the road and bay beyond, while those at the back have uninterrupted views of the mountain.
