Bottom Line

This 110-room luxury boutique, located in a historic building across the street from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, has a grand marble lobby, theatrical costumes on display, sophisticated (if smallish) rooms, an artisanal American restaurant, and a cozy lounge. But it lacks some amenities you'll find at larger luxury properties, including a spa and pool. For those, you'll have to sacrifice historic character and try the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center (also downtown).

Hotel Teatro

Scene

A theater-focused luxury hotel housed in a historic Renaissance Revival building

The 110-room Hotel Teatro is located in a beautiful Renaissance Revival building dating to 1911, when it operated as the headquarters for the Denver Tramway. Original details -- such as the grand wall-to-ceiling marble work in the hotel lobby, and the dramatic, gray-veined marble staircase -- have been preserved.

Teatro literally means theater in Italian and Spanish, and this downtown luxury hotel is perfectly situated for theater enthusiasts. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is located right across the street, and the hotel fully embraces the proximity by offering theater-night packages and one-of-a-kind theater decor. Original costumes, including a costume Annette Bening wore for the Denver Theatre Company, are on proud display on the walls. The rooms are decorated with a little theater flair as well, including old production posters and still photographs from performances. The staff is knowledgeable about current shows, and some of them have theater backgrounds themselves.

Rooms

Contemporary and upscale, but a little small for the price

While smaller than other luxury hotel rooms in the Downtown Denver area, the rooms at Hotel Teatro are understated and sophisticated, with plush beds featuring cashmere-blend pillow-tops and modern bathrooms. Large windows and 12-foot ceilings that make the rooms feel more spacious than they are.

Rooms are decorated in pale grays, mossy greens, and warm tans and oranges, with objects like antique-style globes, bell jars, and stone Buddha statues sitting on the highly polished marble coffee tables and countertops. Most rooms have a couch and chair, a marble/leather work desk, and cherrywood furnishings.

Large bathrooms feature large separate tubs, glass showers with rainfall showerheads, granite countertops (most with double sinks), and Guild + Pepper toiletries.

All rooms come with Keurig coffeemakers, empty mini-fridges, iPod docks, 32-inch flat-screen HDTVs, and free Wi-Fi. Only six of the 110 rooms are suites.

Features

A farm-to-table restaurant, library-like coffee shop/bar/lounge, and small fitness center

The on-site American restaurant, The Nickel, serves dishes like blueberry buttermilk pancakes (breakfast and brunch), fried steak sandwiches (lunch), and molasses-glazed lamb shank (dinner). In addition to an impressive wine and draft beer list, The Nickel offers house cocktails made with oak-barrel-aged spirits. The Nickel also provides 24-hour room service.

The hotel's 2014 renovation introduced The Study -- a cozy living-room-like lounge serving coffee and breakfast in the mornings, lunch in the afternoons, and cocktails and small plates in the evenings.

Hotel Teatro doesn't have a spa or pool, but in-room spa treatments available, and there is a small 24-hour fitness center, with four cardio machines and a single rack of free weights.

Only valet parking is available, and it comes with a daily fee, but the hotel offers free car/shuttle service within a 2.5-mile radius.

Ample meeting and event space includes a wine cellar with vaulted stone ceiling, a mezzanine area above The Nickel, and an eighth-floor banquet hall with Rocky Mountains views.

Hotel Teatro is very pet-friendly, with no weight limit or extra fees. The hotel even works with a local canine massage therapist.
