The 72-room SummerPlace Inn in Destin has the look and feel of any number of chain hotels scattered along the Florida Panhandle, but it is actually an independently owned property. British-Colonial style rooms are priced friendlier than at nearby resorts, and the hotel has eco-friendly policies. Perks include a free daily breakfast, two pools, and free Wi-Fi, but some guests complain about the lack of direct beach access.

Outfitted for extended stays and rocking a slightly outdated decor, Candlewood Suites Destin - Miramar Beach has 75 all-suite rooms with fully equipped kitchens, sleeper sofas, and in some cases, apartment-stye layouts. Property features include an outdoor pool, fitness center, and even a barbecue area. Located off Highway 98 and within a mile of Miramar Beach and the nation's largest outlet mall, it's a good value for families and convenient to many of the area's most popular attractions. Business travelers can take advantage of the in-room desks and business center. 

While it seems par for the course with condo accommodation in the area, Holiday Surf and Racquet Club's outdated decor looks as if it could belong in the home of someone's retired Floridian grandparents. However, the 86 large, individually decorated and updated (or not) units are perfect for long stays, privacy-seeking couples, young groups of friends, or families.Full kitchens, personal screened-in patios, and non-existent room service give guests maximum privacy and self-sufficiency. The 74-room Holiday Inn Express Destin E - Commons Mall Area offers a value-priced vacation in walking distance to shopping and the beach. Guest rooms are clean and modern, with microwaves and mini-fridges, and suites with fold-out couches and wet bars are available. The property also offers an outdoor pool, a small gym, and free continental breakfast with cinnamon rolls. However, rooms don’t have balconies or inspiring views.

Wingate by Wyndham in Destin offers 94 big, comfortable rooms with microwaves, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs. Some extra perks make this hotel an especially good value, including free daily breakfast and free Wi-Fi. It's a budget property, so amenities are basic -- the pool is small and the fitness center has only a handful machines. The location is a quiet one, off of Destin's main highway to the north, rather than to the south, toward the beach.

Sterling Shores is one of the nicer (and larger) condo resorts in the Destin area. The property has a bit more style than the competition, though the bar isn't especially high. The rooms are bright and airy, and there are two pools at the resort. While allunits have a Gulf view, the beach is actually across a small road. With special events for kids and a small movie theater, Sterling Shores is a great choice for families.
