Bottom Line

The Dreams Punta Cana is a lovely upper-mid-range all-inclusive property in Bavaro. Like many similar resorts in the area, it sits on a white-sand beach and offers a long list of features, such as water sports, daily and nightly entertainment, and numerous kid-friendly amenities. But the Dreams goes above and beyond with one of the largest pools in the D.R. (it never feels crowded), and above-average food at its many restaurants. Rooms are on the small side for the price, and standard rooms require an additional fee for Wi-Fi, but overall this is a great option for families and couples.

Oyster Hotel Review

A serene, big hotel on the beach

Perhaps due to its slightly higher rates and removed location (a ways from Punta Cana’s party scene), the Dreams lacks the raucous spring break vibe that so many associate with Punta Cana, and instead attracts families and couples seeking a tranquil vacation. Even during peak season, the property rarely feels overcrowded, thanks to pristine sprawling grounds (where flamingos, parrots, and other wildlife can be spotted) and one of the largest pools in the D.R. The beach, however, can get a bit congested during the day; guests staying in Preferred Club rooms have a designated VIP spot on the sand.

On a pretty white-sand beach in Bavaro

Map of Dreams Punta Cana Resort and Spa

The Dreams Punta Cana is located on a pretty, white-sand beach in Bavaro, an area that is largely associated as Punta Cana but is, in fact, just slightly north of it. The resort is about an hour taxi ride (costing about $70 USD) north of the Punta Cana airport. Once arrived, guests mostly stay on the property: There's not much outside of the complex's gates, and the hotel is a ways from the bustling city center of Punta Cana.

Rooms may be a bit smaller than those at similar properties, but they are modern and pretty.

The 620 rooms at the Dreams are decidedly modern, and provide a clean, calming oasis for guests. Decorated in all white (with occasional pops of color in the comforters and accent pillows), they feature balconies or terraces, sleek bathrooms, iPod docks, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with DVD players. Only Club Preferred rooms come with free Wi-Fi.

Staying in a Club Preferred room gets guests plenty of perks. Not only are rooms significantly more spacious (standard Deluxe rooms are relatively small for the price), but these guests also get free in-room Wi-Fi, champagne, and fruit, as well as special access to a sunny, modern lounge serving snacks and cocktails, and a designated VIP area at the beach. Suites are the most luxe option with separate living rooms, massive balconies with whirlpool tubs, and large bathrooms with double vanities and upgraded toiletries.

All rooms also come with mini-fridges stocked with beer, sodas, waters, and snacks, name-brand liquor, coffeemakers, laptop-sized safes, irons and ironing boards, plush robes, and nice bathroom extras such as incense, sunscreen, and toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The rooms are spread out over nine buildings; while some are just about a two-minute walk from the beach, others are about seven minutes away from the sand.

One of the largest pools in the D.R. and above average food

Often one of the biggest complaints at all-inclusive properties, the food at the Dreams -- which features seven restaurants –- is decidedly above average. Guests have an array of options, from buffet-style to a la carte, and snacks are available throughout the day. Name-brand liquor is also served at all of the restaurants, as well as in the property’s six bars.

The Dreams’ grounds are massive, and yet you can see the pool from just about every point; this gives you an idea of just how large it is. In fact, the property’s pristine pool, with a swim-up bar and lazy river elements, is one of the largest in the D.R. and it rarely feels crowded. The beach, on the other hand, can get a bit packed by midday. It is lovely, nonetheless, and offers a long list of included non-motorized water sports.

Families will likely appreciate the property’s numerous kid-friendly amenities; it features a great kids’ club, where children can enjoy arts and crafts, as well as a sprawling playground and a mini water park with fun features such as a pirate ship and slides. Nightly entertainment is often geared towards those with tots in tow.

Couples will also find plenty to enjoy; after all, there’s a reason the Dreams hosts about 400 weddings annually! The property features a spacious fitness center, with several cardio and weight-training machines, a casino, and a lovely spa -- the latter being the resort’s most romantic feature. With a salon, tranquil outdoor walkways spanning over koi fish ponds, airy treatment rooms, and numerous features such as sensations showers, steam baths, whirlpools, and ice baths, it is one of the most up-to-date hotel spas in the area.
