Bottom Line

The 95-room DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee is an upscale, chain hotel set in pretty landscaped gardens four miles from the center of Dundee. Split between a 19th-century mansion and modern add-ons, the property has a good quality, if expensive, restaurant, a fully equipped fitness center, an an indoor pool and poolside sauna, and a business center. With little within walking distance and no available public transportation, guests will need a car -- the hotel is easily reached by road.

DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee

Scene

Part 19th-century mansion with bright conservatory set in landscaped gardens

Formerly the Landmark Hotel, the property underwent an expensive renovation and reopened as part of the DoubleTree by Hilton chain in 2013. The hotel comprises a fine Scottish mansion dating back to 1870, together with a less attractive 20th-century extension, housing most of the rooms across two floors (though no elevator). Another modern add-in is the pleasant and particularly bright conservatory occupied by the restaurant, which overlooks six acres of superbly landscaped gardens, including a maze and a pretty walled garden. New arrivals receive the brand's signature warm chocolate chip cookie upon check-in, while interiors follow the typically smart, upscale DoubleTree styling throughout -- with the odd traditional touch scattered through. While geared largely toward business guests, the hotel is also popular with couples looking for a peaceful break, and hosts the occasional wedding.

Location

Off the A90 roundabout four miles from Dundee city center

The hotel is located on the outskirts of Dundee off a busy roundabout that connects to the A90 and the city center about four miles away. Surrounded by green fields, there is little if nothing within walking distance of the property, including public transport connections. The location, however, does mean particularly easy access to the city of Perth -- about a 20-minute drive away -- as well as Dundee Airport, about a five-minute drive.

Rooms

Generally well-maintained and stylish rooms with free -- though patchy -- Wi-Fi

The hotel has 95 rooms -- spread between old and newer buildings -- all of which were renovated in 2013 and are smart and stylish in neutral tones with splashes of tartan and purple velvet. Flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi come standard -- though the Wi-Fi signal can be patchy -- while Superior Rooms also include bathrobes, air conditioning, and mini-fridges. While generally clean and well-kept, there have been reports of poor maintenance in places. Despite proximity to a roundabout and the main road, traffic noise doesn't seem to be a problem in the rooms.

Features

Bright and pleasant restaurant, (small) indoor pool, and sauna

The Maze Restaurant (named after the hotel's own maze) is a bright and particularly pleasant space serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the well-tended gardens -- though breakfast is not included in the room rate and the menu can be expensive. There's also a cozy lounge bar with a log-effect fireplace and plenty of soft seating for evening drinks. The hotel has an indoor pool, and there is also a poolside sauna and neighboring fitness room. Parking is free of charge, as is Wi-Fi throughout -- though it can be spotty.
