Bottom Line

The historic Hotel Berchielli, where Pablo Picasso stayed for an extended period in late 1949, is literally steps from the Ponte Vecchio and in the heart of Florence's best concentration of museums, shopping, and restaurants. The 76 classically decorated rooms and suites -- some with incredible views of the Arno, the iconic medieval bridge, and the Oltrarno neighborhood -- are spacious by Florence standards, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are stocked with boutique Etro toiletries, but note that the shower/tub combos in some bathrooms have handheld showerheads. Modernists may prefer the nearby and stylish Continentale Firenze, whose rooftop bar practically hovers above the Ponte Vecchio, but its rates can cost many times those of Hotel Berchielli.

Hotel Berchielli

Location

On a quiet street facing the Arno River, near the heart of Florence

The Hotel Berchielli's solid location is one of its strongest suits: It's situated near central Firenze facing the Arno River, offering a quiet locale close to many of the city's main draws. Everything from upscale boutiques to popular public squares is within walking distance.

Florence is extremely pedestrian-friendly, and is one of Italy's most beautiful cities -- it's more compact, and less gritty, than Rome. The Duomo is the most iconic sight here, but other popular attractions include Michelangelo's "David" at the Galleria dell'Accademia, the works of Botticelli and da Vinci at the Uffizi, and the Ponte Vecchio bridge, which dates back to the 1300s. The Piazza della Signora is a popular tourist hub, and many hotels are located near it.

  • One- to five-minute walk to designer shopping and dozens of bars and restaurants
  • Two-minute walk to the 14th-century Ponte Vecchio bridge
  • Four-minute walk to Palazzo Strozzi cultural center
  • Four-minute walk to Palazzo Rucellai
  • Four-minute walk to the Uffizi Gallery, which houses Botticelli's "Birth of Venus"
  • Five-minute walk to Piazza della Signoria -- the political center of Florence
  • Five-minute walk to Museo Galileo
  • Six-minute walk to Piazza della Repubblica
  • Nine-minute walk to Museo Horne, which houses a private collection of Renaissance art and furniture
  • Nine-minute walk to Piazza Santa Croce
  • 11-minute walk to the iconic Duomo cathedral
  • 11-minute walk to San Lorenzo Market
  • 12-minute walk to Museo dei Fratelli Alinari photography museum
  • 12-minute walk to Teatro Verdi
  • 13-minute walk to Santa Maria Novella train station
