The hotel is a historic property that dates back more than 800 years. Originally owned by the famous Caracciolo noble family and then home of Joachim Murat, King of Naples during the early 19th century, this traditional palazzo offers a first taste of Naples’ rich history. Despite having been renovated on several occasions, the property has retained many of its original details -- the most striking of which is probably the cloister. Coffered ceilings, traditional clay tiles, and arched doorways blend easily with bold contemporary decor in whites with pops of bright colors. In the warmer months, the hotel sets up a number of tables in the cloister and in its arched galleries for guests to enjoy a drink at night or a meal from the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant.

Palazzo Caracciolo is conveniently located within a 15- to 20-minute walk of many major attractions, including the National Archaeological Museum, the Cappella Sansevero, and San Lorenzo Maggiore. The surrounding neighborhood is somewhat dilapidated, but it does have some local charm, and the streets of the historic district -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site -- are just blocks away. For longer distances, the hotel is about a 10-minute walk from metro lines 1 and 2.

Palazzo Caracciolo offers a wide range of room types, from Superior Rooms with double beds to Historical Suites with king-size beds and over 750 square feet of space. Regardless of the category, all have stylish white decor livened up with silver or gold accents, and muted washes of color on the walls. Flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, stocked minibars, and free bottled water are all standard amenities. Bathrooms are modern and attractive, with black tiling and cream-colored walls. Some rooms feature a furnished terrace overlooking the lovely cloister, or a balcony facing the street. Connecting and accessible rooms are both available, and families traveling with kids can request cribs at no extra charge. Note that there is a fee for in-room coffee and tea.

La Cucina is a solid restaurant serving up a traditional regional menu with a contemporary twist. It offers outdoor seating in the lovely cloister or in the glass-enclosed, air-conditioned arched galleries around it. There is also a breakfast room where a buffet is served every morning (for a fee), and a pretty garden with tables where guests can have a drink or enjoy coffee and pastries. There is no fitness center or parking on-site, but guests can use off-site facilities for a fee. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
