Pros
- Spacious condo-style rooms with full kitchens
- Pool and hot tub located at each villa cluster (eight total)
- Fitness center and eleven tennis courts
- Grilling areas at various locations throughout property
- Free Wi-Fi
- Free covered parking
- 36 holes of golf at adjacent Kona Country Club
Cons
- No on-site beach access (5-minute drive to Kahaluu Beach Park)
- Patios and lanais face other villas and have limited privacy
- Loud, generic room decor
- Locating office for check-in can be confusing (property shared with another resort)
- Parking areas often a trek from rooms (golf cart rides offered by staff)
Bottom Line
The Holua Resort at the Mauna Loa Village is a bungalow-style condo complex, located to the south of Kailua-Kona in the Keahou Bay area. These large units feature full kitchens, living/dining areas and expansive lanais. The decor is generic and overly bright, but the beds and furniture are extremely comfortable. Eight fenced-in pools with hot tubs are located throughout the property, which prevents overcrowding. But there's no beach access, and having a car or rental is a necessity if planning to leave the property.

Location
South of Kailua-Kona, in the Keahou Bay area
The Holua Resort is a 13-minute drive south of Kailua Village (a.k.a Kailua-Kona), a small -- but busy -- seaside town on the Kona coast. The main shops, restaurants, and nightlife spots can be found on Alii Drive, and the Kailua Pier -- where the annual Ironman Triathlon starts and finishes -- is a popular place to watch the sunset. There are also several historic attractions in the town, including the Hulihee Palace (once a royal summer home and now a museum), and the Ahuena Heiau, a reconstructed temple where King Kamehameha spent the final years of his life.
The Big Island is packed with natural wonders, including active volcanoes, where visitors can still see lava flows, numerous beaches, and rainforests. It's by far the largest of the Hawaiian islands, so be prepared to drive to experience some of the top attractions.
