Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • On-site beach access -- with lots of sea turtle sightings
  • Big, stylish rooms with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs
  • Adults-only infinity pool, kids' pool, and Jacuzzi
  • Walking distance to shops and restaurants
  • Beautiful 15-acre grounds with lots of pretty walkways leading to beach
  • Located next to two championship golf courses, which guests can use

Cons

  • Pricey on-site dining
  • No Wi-Fi in rooms
  • Smallish bathrooms

Bottom Line

This upscale 533-room resort is perched on Anaehoomalu Bay on the Kohala coast, offering on-site beach access, lovely grounds with winding paths and fish ponds, and two pools. Rooms are big and stylish, but they lack Wi-Fi, and bathrooms are typically on the small side. The location -- next to two championship golf courses, and within walking distance of shops and restaurants -- is convenient, especially since guests may be inclined to skip the pricey, mediocre on-site dining.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

On Anaehoomalu Bay on the Kohala coast, with some of the Big Island's best sunsets and snorkeling

This Marriott resort rests on Anaehoomalu Bay, which has a beautiful beach that is, typically, not very busy. It's part of the Big Island's northwestern Kohala coast, where ancient sites coexist with luxury resorts and renowned golf courses. This area is also known for its snorkeling, sunsets, and fish ponds.

The Big Island is packed with natural wonders, including active volcanoes, where visitors can still see lava flows, white-sand, black-sand, and even green-sand (!) beaches, cascading waterfalls, and rainforests. It's by far the largest of the Hawaiian islands, so be prepared to drive to experience some of the top attractions.

  • 30-minute drive from Kona International Airport
  • 2-hour drive from Hilo International Airport
  • 2-minute walk to restaurants like Merriman's Market Café, Big Island Steakhouse, Island Fish & Chips, and Sansei Seafood Restaurant
  • 5-minute walk to Queens' Marketplace
  • 8-minute walk to the Waikiloa Petroglyph Reserve, where you can see ancient Hawaiian rock carvings
  • 11-minute walk to Waikoloa Golf Course Beach Course
  • 13-minute walk to Hilton Waikoloa Village golf course
  • 15-minute drive to Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, one of the island's top beaches
  • 18-minute drive to the Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site
  • 33-minute drive to Waimea
  • 36-minute drive to Kailua-Kona
  • 1-hour-40-minute drive to Akaka Falls State Park, home to the 442-foot Akaka Falls and the 100-foot Kahuna Falls
  • 2-hour drive to Mauna Kea Observatories (at the summit)
  • 3-hour-50-minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the island's most popular volcanoes
