Get away from it all: Secluded island retreats (4 of 12)

The D.R.’s only luxury resort set on its own island, the Gran Bahia Cayo Levantado offers a relaxing atmosphere for couples and families. There are scenic beaches, beautiful pools, and some of the best rooms in the country (each with private Jacuzzi tubs). There are two gorgeous pools on-site, one by the beach and one closer to the main resort area. Both have bars nearby and plenty of lounge chairs, and both are exceptionally clean. The snack bar at the beach pool has a basic buffet with hot dogs, hamburgers, rice, salad, and selected entrees. Relax in the hammocks on the quiet beach at Ke Iki Beach Bungalows, a charming but no-frills property on Oahu's picturesque North Shore. Oahu's most famous surfing spots and a charming surfer town, Haleiwa, are just down the street. Location trumps luxury at these 11 beachfront bungalows sitting just above the sand on the picturesque North Shore. Sure, the bungalows are modest, amenities are zero, and service is minimal. But a beautiful beach is just outside the door, as are hammocks and grills. The Hotel Hana-Maui delivers rustic luxury in the middle of Maui's lush, secluded east coast. It's not directly on the beach but it has two beautiful pools, including an infinity pool overlooking Hana Bay. Incredible service, a top spa, excellent food, a long list of stuff to do, and only 77 rooms on acres of uncrowded property makes the Hotel Hana-Maui one of our favorites. The rooms are large, clean, sleekly furnished -- and stripped of TVs, clocks, and radios. It may be hard to reach, but it's worth the trip. With just 30 hippy-chic cottages in secluded Treasure Beach, Jake's is a member of Island Outpost, Jamaica's trendiest hotel group. Guests come to unplug -- there's no phone, Internet, or TV in the cottages. The black-sand beaches aren't Jamaica's most impressive, but the on-site painting and yoga classes, excellent food, and the Driftwood Spa make this a particular favorite. Driftwood Spa is set in an impressive building atop the cliffs. The spa has a calm, pleasing aesthetic (think rustic and artsy, not sterile and steely). But the truly unique part of Driftwood is the several open-air treatment rooms that descend from the main building toward the ocean, built into the cliffs. At Geejam, the setting is gorgeous, the service is extraordinary, and one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches is only 10 minutes away. Quiet isolation it has; a pool, spa facilities, and direct beach access it does not. The Geejam is made up of only five private, high-tech cottages on the lush (rainy) foothills of Port Antonio. Modern electronics in the rooms include 42-inch flat-screens, AppleTV, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. Built from a historic sugar plantation, Caneel Bay is a serene 166-room resort that sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Caneel Beach, the largest beach, also attracts nonresort guests (all beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands are technically open to the public), but the many other beaches on the property are much more secluded. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel’s attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean’s best secluded resorts. Caneel Bay has four quality restaurants, but the most notable is Equator, a restaurant built inside and on top of an 18th-century sugar mill -- the sunset views are spectacular.
