South America is home to some of the world's most luxurious hotels. Check out our favorites (so far!) in this slideshow:
Relais & Chateaux Santa Teresa is a historic mansion turned luxurious boutique hotel located on a former coffee plantation in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro. It features gorgeous tropical decor, which includes bright cabanas in the lounge, lots of lush greenery (by the pool, and throughout on the grounds), tiled mosaics, and island-themed bed runners in the rooms. The hotel also features a gorgeous spa, a rooftop pool with sweeping views of the city, and a restaurant serving delicious French-influenced Brazilian cuisine. The Mine Hotel Boutique is an upscale 20-room hotel in the hip Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo Soho. Though set on a small piece of property, Mine uses its space phenomenally, and features a colorfully modern aesthetic. From the outside, the building has a futuristic vibe, and inside the lobby is a Zen-like open area -- its furnishings are distinct, colorful, and made from a number of natural materials. Each cozy guest room has a different color theme (lime greens, deep pinks, golden yellows) and style (Middle Eastern, Central American, Asian), making each uniquely fashionable. The 220-room Tivoli Sao Paulo Mofarrej is a luxurious option near the downtown area and Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo. Rooms are decorated in neutral colors and feature flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and 24-hour room service (bathrooms, however, are on the small side). Suites and collection rooms might be worth the upgrade as they feature butler service. Hotel highlights include a spacious, light-filled lobby with a glass roof, a small outdoor pool surrounded by cabanas, and an upscale spa by Banyan Tree. The historic Country Club Lima Hotel blends classic elegance with modern comfort. This 83-room property feels upscale with classic decor, wood accents, and up-to-date amenities such as iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. Palatial bathrooms are gorgeous and many feature separate soaking tubs. Features here include a small but intimate outdoor pool, small fitness room, and guest privileges at the 18-hole Lima Country Club golf course. There is also an excellent restaurant, Perroquet Restaurant, and the English Bar serves some of the best cocktails in Lima. The 57-room Lennox Hotel Buenos Aires is located in the central Congreso area, close to government offices. Quirky decorations and artwork, interesting wall patterns, and unusual color schemes -- from the spacious lobby dressed in sleek shades of black, to the chic, dramatically lit private outdoor garden -- make a stay here a distinct and memorable experience. All aesthetics aside, the hotel also offers top-notch comfort, luxury, and hospitality. There's a restaurant serving international dishes using local ingredients, a free breakfast buffet with fresh fruits and hot eggs, and a spa for relaxation. The luxurious NOI Vitacura Hotel is located near the affluent Vitacura neighborhood, known for its fashionable clothing and furniture shops, elite schools, and one of the most exclusive shopping thoroughfares in Santiago, Calle Alonse de Cordova. The building is a stunning masterpiece of modern architecture, towering with elegance and grandeur. Inside, the 87 rooms have wide, floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in lots of natural light, and decor that's chic and cozy at the same time. The rooms come with automatic curtains, sheets imported from Portugal, phones with video conferencing, and beautiful, pristine bathrooms with separate soaking tubs and showers. This gorgeous, stately building resides in the city's financial and political center, just minutes away from Congress and presidential offices. What sets the Savoy apart from other hotels is its classic appearance combined with modern flair. The shiny marble lobby features high ceilings, accentuated by a bright red chandelier and plush red chairs. The stunning lobby bar showcases tall pillars with ornate gold details and crystal chandeliers. The moat of the hotel's rooms are contemporary, with wood floors, dramatic headboards, and bold pops of color (though some units, such as the Corner Suite, have classic decor). Each room offers clean, contemporary bathrooms with walk-in showers and rainfall fixtures. This charming, upscale boutique feels like a private home, with 11 beautiful, individually decorated rooms featuring hardwood floors, comfortable beds, and great amenities. Each room has been dedicated to a significant figure in Argentine history -- such as Evita Peron, Che Guevara, General San Martin and Mafalda -- and has themed decor to match. The cozy library is the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing in the winter, and in the warmer months guests can head up to the rooftop deck, complete with a six-person whirlpool and lounge chairs. There's an attractive breakfast room with classy, homey decor, in which a decent breakfast is served every morning. The Porto Bay Rio Internacional Hotel is located across the street from the popular Copacabana beach. This clean, 117-room hotel is a good upper-mid-range option with simple, sleek decor including blonde wood floors, small modern bathrooms, and a nearly all-white color palette. All rooms have stocked minibars and electric kettles, and some have balconies overlooking the ocean. The small rooftop pool, poolside bar, and fitness center all have great views, and on the beach, attendants provide guests with towels, chairs, and umbrellas. There are also tasty on-site restaurants (one with a free breakfast buffet), and 24-hour room service is available. The Aubrey is a designer boutique hotel housed in a 1927 Spanish mission-style home that was renovated in 2010. This stylish property offers both free breakfast and tea in its dining room, and serves cocktails in its quirky piano lounge, which combines worn leather and wood with neon-pink upholstery. The funky, modern decor mixes with the old-world architecture and original beams to create a uniquely cool vibe. Adding to the charm, each of the 15 rooms is different -- with some boasting private outdoor space and private entrances. All rooms feature colorful modern decor with updated amenities such as large wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, as well as huge sexy, glass-enclosed walk-in showers. Opened in 2011, the Westin Lima Hotel is one of the newest and -- with 301 rooms -- largest hotels in the city. It's located on the outskirts of San Isidro, and though its focus may be on business travelers (it's home to the largest meeting facility in Peru), its upscale, resort-like feel appeals to others as well. The hotel features a top-notch spa, a sleek indoor pool, a large fitness center, and multiple dining options, including a chic bar and a restaurant with a popular breakfast buffet. The rooms have a mod, masculine vibe, with furniture in shades of brown, sleek lines, and modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. This luxury property may be the stateliest hotel in Lima, with a wood-paneled lobby and a chic rooftop pool deck featuring amazing ocean and city views. Rooms are elegant, with royal blue upholstery, gold-toned accents, Italian sheets, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and rain showerheads in the marble bathrooms. The hotel's Miraflores location is superb, near both the enormous Larcomar mall and the beach. The 60-room Hotel Fasano is a luxury boutique in the upscale Jardins neighborhood. It offers impressive features, including a solid fitness center and an intimate, Zen-like spa. In addition, there are several popular on-site restaurants and bars: The Italian fine-dining restaurant is highly acclaimed, Baretto bar offers excellent live music, the lobby bar has art deco style, and the casual restaurant serves three meals a day. Rooms have cool, retro-meets-modern decor -- including funky leather furniture and striped rugs -- as well as flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and iPod docks. Business travelers may also want to consider the nearby (and very similar) Hotel Emiliano, though it lacks Hotel Fasano's chic indoor pool. The Hotel InterContinental in Santiago is housed in three buildings in Las Condes, a fast-growing business hub in the Chilean capital. Because of its location, the hotel is geared toward business clientele, with 377 rooms and an indoor pool and fitness center. The main building is the Vitacura Tower, which is connected to the Club Tower by a bridge. A spacious area that houses the conference and event rooms (20 in total) divides the two towers. For rooms, the Club Tower is the newer wing, and every floor has its own name and style, inspired by various geographic areas of the country. All rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs and CD players, but the Club Tower rooms are a step above in terms of modern amenities and decor. The Grand Hyatt is one of the largest hotels in Santiago and has a resort-style atmosphere with lush grounds and an outdoor pool and waterfall. Its circular high-rise structure holds 310 rooms and spacious suites that include modern amenities, beige interiors, and black and white accents. Huge windows let in great city views, but guests may want to ask for a higher floor to guarantee those picturesque snow-capped Andes. The hotel appeals to both business and leisure guests with its clay tennis courts, jogging path, spa, fitness center, and ample event space. Transport via Mercedes or mini-bus is available 24 hours a day, and private wine tours can be arranged.
