Five-star romance: Where to splurge on a romantic retreat (3 of 21)

As part of the evening turndown service, a housekeeper can fill up the in-room Jacuzzi tub and line it with candles and rose petals.
Designed by Oscar de la Renta, the 15-room Tortuga Bay hotel offers amazing service (including preferential treatment at Punta Cana Airport), an on-site nature reserve, several superb restaurants, and a world-class golf course. The elegant guest rooms all come with four-poster beds, Frette linens, soft pillows, and down comforters -- all things that you don't often see in Dominican resorts. As part of the evening turndown service, a housekeeper can fill up the in-room Jacuzzi tub and line it with candles and rose petals. The restaurant, Bamboo, serves some of the best fine dining fare in the Dominican Republic; it's easily comparable to good restaurants in New York or Miami. San Francisco's top luxury hotel is hard to beat for a romantic retreat. A touch-screen next to the bed controls the music, lights, shades, and TV --- and puts guests in contact with a 24-hour butler, who will, among other things, draw a bath in the deep tub that opens to the room. Ame opened with the hotel in 2005 to much critical and popular acclaim, and its mixture of Japanese and new American cuisine is still considered one of the best fine dining restaurants in San Francisco. But the St. Regis' real highlight is its 9,000-square-foot Remede Spa, which includes chocolate truffles and champagne in its relaxation rooms and a serene 24-hour indoor swimming pool. A true jewel, this historic grand hotel is world-class yet refreshingly unpretentious (unless you count the Hollywood crowd at the popular lobby bar). But there is nothing modest about its spacious elegant rooms, rooftop pool, and commanding location right on the beach -- a rarity in L.A. The hotel's rooftop pool and Jacuzzi overlook the beach. The casual fine dining restaurant, Veranda, serves light Californian meals and features live jazz combos most evenings. The spacious, supremely comfortable rooms are full of thoughtful details, and about half of them have full or partial beach views. Built from a historic sugar plantation, this profoundly serene 166-room resort sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel's attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean's best resorts. Designed like rustic bungalows with natural wood and stone, the rooms are clean and comfortable, if less elaborate than one might imagine from a hotel room in this price range. If you book a beachfront room, you can walk right from you own private balcony and out onto the sand. The Caneel Beach Bar and Grill is the only spot you can watch TV on site. Equator, the most notable of the Caneel Bay's four restaurants, is built inside an 18th-century sugar mill. It has spectacular sunset views. A world-class spa, seven pools, a busy casino, and big-name fine dining come together to make the Palazzo one of the most luxurious, and most romantic, hotel on the Vegas Strip. The Palazzo's suite-style guest rooms (with sunken living rooms) are among the biggest and best on the Strip. The huge, luxurious bathrooms have flat-screen TVs and large soaking tubs. And because the Palazzo has seven pools, there's ample space to find a little adult time in the sun.
