Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Good downtown location within walking distance of many sights
  • Suites feature separate living rooms with sofa beds
  • Free Wi-Fi and huge flat-screen TVs
  • Wet bars, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges
  • Business-friendly amenities include a 24-hour business center, several meeting rooms, a convenience store, and laundry facilities
  • Free hot breakfasts, nightly cocktail receptions, and 24-hour room service
  • Heated outdoor pool and a 24-hour fitness center
  • Free shuttle to several downtown sights
  • Pets allowed for a reasonable one-time fee

Cons

  • Pricey valet parking (typical for downtown)

Bottom Line

The Embassy Suites in downtown Houston goes above and beyond the expected standards of a mid-range chain hotel. Rather than drab furniture and so-so amenities, this hotel features bright, modern decor throughout, from the lobby to the 262 suites, while the heated rooftop pool has cool water features and quality lounge chairs. The hotel largely caters to business travelers -- with amenities such as free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour business center, 24-hour room service, and a 24-hour fitness center -- but families can also appreciate the big suites featuring separate living areas with sofa beds, wet bars, and huge flat-screen TVs. Freebies such as hot breakfast and a nightly reception are additional upsides. If you're bringing your car along, however, be prepared to pay a steep daily parking fee; unfortunately, that's the norm in the area.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

Convenient downtown location, less than 20 minutes from the nearest airport

The Embassy Suites is located in downtown Houston, within walking distance of many attractions, including Minute Maid Park, Discovery Green, and Verizon Wireless Theater. Local eateries and clothing boutiques are nearby, while the Johnson Space Center and boardwalk are across town.

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and Houston definitely lives up to that. Characterized by steamy summer days and mild winter nights, the thriving metropolis sprawls over a flat landscape punctuated by tall, stately buildings and winding roadways. Major areas include East End, Montrose, Downtown, and the Kirby districts, but shopping, restaurants, and other attractions can be found off most major highways.

As the country's fourth biggest city, Houston is home to several major sports franchises, including the Astros, Rockets, and Texans, as well as the Johnson Space Center, where visitors can hear the infamous line, "Houston, we have a problem" from Apollo 13.

  • 19-minute drive to William P. Hobby Airport
  • 32-minute drive to George Bush Intercontinental Airport
  • 1- to 5-minute walk to dozens of bars and restaurants
  • 2-minute walk to Discovery Green Park
  • 6-minute walk to the Toyota Center
  • 11-minute walk to Minute Maid Park
  • 20-minute walk to Verizon Wireless Theater
  • 7-minute drive to the Houston Ballet
  • 8-minute drive to Buffalo Bayou Park
  • 12-minute drive to Gus Wortham Golf Course
  • 13-minute drive to Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo
  • 15-minute drive to Reliant Stadium
  • 38-minute drive to Johnson Space Center
  • 42-minute drive to Kemah Boardwalk
