  • Some rooms lack ocean views and A/C

Bottom Line

The quaint 32-room Hotel Rocamar is located in downtown Isla Mujeres and overlooks the Caribbean Sea. The no-frills property features rooms that are equipped with only the basics -- in-room safe, mini-fridge, and bed (there's no TV or phone) -- and plain decor, save for a few Mexican-style decorations. They are, however, clean and comfortable. Though some pricier units are more spacious and come with kitchenettes, not all of these have air-conditioning, which could certainly be an issue during the hot summer season. Most have terraces with hammocks and excellent ocean views. The bathrooms have mosaic-style tiling, but some have glass walls, which can be awkward for guests who prefer their privacy. It's a simple hotel, and it's not on the beach, but the stunning views alone are worth the relatively affordable price.

Map of Hotel Rocamar

Isla Mujeres is a small island located eight miles east of Cancun. Meaning "Island of Women," the Isla Mujeres got its name from Spanish conquistadors who, when settling there in the 16th century, discovered numerous idols in honor of Ix Chel, the Mayan goddess of childbirth and fertility. Only five miles long and half a mile wide, it has historically been a quiet, secluded fishing village. But as vacationers have flocked to the Riviera Maya section of the Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Mujeres has experienced a boom in tourism. For travelers in search of a more tranquil, relaxing experience far from the rowdiness and endless bustle of Cancun, the island is an ideal getaway spot.

Here guests can revel in the island's quaint charm, marvel at the beautiful Caribbean Sea, walk among the locals carrying their fishnets, and purchase handcrafted trinkets and taste native fruits and vegetables in the downtown area. In addition to swimming, snorkeling, and shopping, there are also a number of sights to see on Isla Mujeres, such as the old mansion and gardens of Hacienda Mundaca, the easternmost part of Mexico and the highest elevation in the Yucatan, Punta Sur, the reefs of Garrafon Park, and the lovely soft sands of Playa Norte.
