Geejam Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Whether you're staying at a mega-resort or a chic boutique, the key to relaxing in Jamaica lies at the spa (...or elsewhere). Some of our favorite hotels offer guests an opportunity to wind-down in style. Chill out: The Geejam is made up of only five private, high-tech cottages on the lush (rainy) foothills of Port Antonio. The setting is gorgeous, the service is extraordinary, and one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches is only 10 minutes away. Quiet isolation it has; a pool, spa facilities, and direct beach access it does not. But in-room treatments are available. The recording studio also has a private terrace with space for a massage table, and the actual natural sounds trump the prerecorded mixes in any enclosed spa.

The best of the three Iberostar resorts in Montego Bay, this 295-room all-suite hotel is light years beyond its neighbors in terms of decor, food, and features. Spa Sensations is shared between all three Iberostar properties in Montego Bay. It has a salon featuring hair, make-up, and nail services; a relaxation room with Jacuzzi and hydrotherapy pool; a boutique featuring a variety of products; and extensive fitness center that includes a juice bar and a Pilates and spinning studio. Signature treatments incorporate local ingredients such as coffee, cocoa, and oranges, and span a variety of specialties including Shiatsu, Swedish, and Turkish massage. Round Hill is phenomenal. Sincere, intimate hospitality; private child care; large, beautifully designed rooms by Ralph Lauren; and breathtaking grounds (to which no photo can do justice) -- it is easily among the best resorts in Jamaica. Round Hill's spa experience begins before guests reach the actual spa building: Guests can unwind on the spa's beachfront lawn, dotted with padded lounge chairs, cabanas, and hammocks. Throughout the stone-lined, jungle-filled grounds are relaxation enclaves where cozy couches invite guests to linger in the midst of nature. And at the top of a stone staircase that winds through the thicket, an outdoor hydrotherapy treatment space surrounded by breadfruit trees, palms, and chenille plants offers seclusion. This former coffee plantation nestled among the steep and winding hills of Jamaica's famous Blue Mountain is a little oasis above the city of Kingston. The resort offers plenty of intimacy and privacy, with just 12 cottages on more than 26 acres. It also has the features of a larger property, chief among them an expansive spa. This breezy indoor/outdoor complex puts the views at forefront when possible, incorporating a relaxing area at the edge of a cliff, an isolated plunge pool, an outdoor yoga pavilion at the edge of a blossoming lawn, and a hydrotherapy treatment room accessed via a winding jungle path. The remaining therapy rooms are housed in a quaint Georgian-style building, as is the spa reception area. For a 12-room resort, the spa is truly expansive, featuring a diverse menu of therapies, including Ayurvedic and hydrotherapy treatments as well as a variety of massages, facials, wraps, and salon experiences. The Secrets Wild Orchid spa features more than 20 treatment rooms and palapas, as well as a menu of specialties that ranges from facials and mud baths to hydrotherapies and traditional massages. Perks include a juice bar, a relaxation room with hot and cold pools, a yoga garden, a hair salon, and a boutique. Locker rooms also include saunas, steam rooms, pressure showers, and Swiss showers. Throughout the resort's grounds are several serene ponds for contemplative reflection. One of these is the site of Couples Negril's spa, which includes a salon and a few "tree house" treatment rooms, which are sprinkled throughout the grounds. Nice as they are, spas at Couples Swept Away and Couples Tower Isle are more impressive in terms of design and amenities. Spa buffs might consider one of the chain's sister properties instead. Sans Souci's tree house treatment rooms are a highlight. Perched among native jungle along cliffs that overlook the beach below and an unending horizon of ocean, these hideaways are far removed from the rest of the resort and offer a truly serene experience. The spa's coolest treatment room, called Swept Away, is located at the bottom of a natural waterfall just at the sea's edge. Guests can enjoy treatments to the hypnotic sounds of falling water, and even take a secluded dip in the sea via a private beach entrance. The treatment menu is a bit more tailored than at other Couples resorts, though it still includes a wide range of therapies from Swedish and deep tissue to aromatherapy and hot stone. The award-winning spa at Couple Tower Isle is easily one of the best spas on the island, and has an art-deco-meets-zen style. It is housed in a stark white U-shaped structure supported by oversize columns, and there is a serene plunge pool crowned by a Buddha statue in its center. While it's unclear if anyone ever actually goes into this little pool, it adds to the relaxing vibe. There are also few lounge chairs with brightly colored umbrellas, a small juice bar, and a relaxation lounge. The spa includes a salon, which features hair, make-up, and nail services. The Radiant Spa at The Jewel is modest but mellow, featuring a whirlpool, hot and cold plunge pools, beautiful bathhouse-style locker rooms on the first floor, and a square-shaped second-floor balcony with treatment rooms all around. The treatment rooms themselves are small and relatively unadorned, though two rooms are for couples, one of which has a two-person bathtub. Therapies are extensive, including several massage styles, body wraps and scrubs, hydrotherapy, and facials. The spa also has a separate salon, which is located near the lobby and provides hair, nail, and make-up services. The resort's Oasis Spa offers a full menu of spa and beauty services in clean, dimly lit, and often romantic facilities designed for pairs. Expect to pay around $90 for a 60-minute massage; other services range from $25 to $200 (consistent with most resorts). "Spa Zone: Keep the Vibes Calm" proclaims a sign along the winding jungle path that leads to the Rockhouse Spa. The vibes are indeed mellow at this earthy, thatched-roof spa, which is centered around a pond filled with lily pads and a trickling fountain. Made up of just a couple of treatment rooms, a mani/pedi room, and a relaxation lounge, the space is quaint and serene. Treatments are extra special at the Spa Pavilion, a freestanding thatched-roof hut that stands at the edge of a cliff among the Premiere Villas' private sundeck. The sound of waves crashing into the rocky outcroppings below are part of the immersive and holistic experience that is integral to the Rockhouse Spa concept. In terms of size, the spa at Sunset at the Palms may be no match for nearby megaresorts, but its simple, airy vibe seems to jive much better with the local bohemian style of Negril anyway. Just one spacious open-air treatment room features two massage tables, surrounded by local flora and palms. Treatments include a range of massages and facials, and a small salon provides hair, nail, and make-up services.
