Chose Jamaica because they speak english, have great food and great music.
Chose the Ritz, because an ocean front room there was a third the price of Hawaii.
Was very happy with the whole experience. Had breakfast in bed every day and the prices were reasonable by US standards. Rent a 4 by 4 (just for a few days), the roads can get edgy (look out for the goats and remember they drive on the wrong side of the road).
'Scotties' is rural, right down the road and serves killer Jamaica Jerk. The 'Sugar Mill' is expensive but almost within walking distance and is the best food we had. Ocho Rios, a great ride east along the coast, 'Evitas' is an open air Italian/Jamaican/Spanish open air restaurant in the hills over looking the sea - awesome (Evita is there and will talk to you!)
Advice, stay at least 7 days, the first one lets you chill, you get better rates and you won't want to leave anyway. I come from a vacation destination town.
Best vacation of my life, lived like a king at lest than half the price!
