- No all-night party scene, as found on the Strip
- A 30- to 40-minute taxi ride (about $60) to the Strip from some hotels
- No public transportation, just metered taxis
- Some hotels located along major highways -- less pretty scenery
- Most resort casinos draw a local crowd, not lively tourists
- Fewer prestigious dining options in general than on the Strip
- Blistering summers; average highs in the 100s (Fahrenheit) during July and August
What It's Like
A suburb of Las Vegas, and the second largest city in Nevada, Henderson was, until recently, one of the fastest growing cities in America. But unlike the centralized grandiosity of the Las Vegas Strip, Henderson is a bit more spread out. Long empty stretches of highway spotted with the occasional strip mall divide one immaculate resort from another. For the most part, the resorts are destinations unto themselves.
Where To Stay
While there are a number of less-than-thrilling business hotels and extended-stay suites sprinkled throughout Henderson -- the Siena Suites, Homewood Suites, and Residence Inn by Marriott, just to name a few -- the biggest draw to this city is its luxury-level lodging at exceptionally low rates.
The relatively new M Resort & Casino, for example, contends with some of the most luxurious hotels on the Strip with its lively casino, adults-only pool scene, and top-notch bars and restaurants -- and yet it often costs much less than a better-known hotel like the Wynn.
But the more appealing reason to consider Henderson is for an entirely un-Vegas Experience. The subdued yet breathtaking Green Valley Ranch makes for an exceptional spa retreat (and it still has a casino, of course). To be completely cut off from the gambling, families might want to consider the Loews Lake Las Vegas or the more affordable nearby rental-condos at the MonteLago Village Resort.
