Bottom Line

The Bilmar Beach Resort is a 166-room mid-range hotel located directly on the beach, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico in Treasure Island. The resort features an array of family-friendly activities and is located within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and the boardwalk at historic John’s Pass. Rooms conveniently have kitchenettes, but the kitschy Florida decor in the lobby and rooms could use an update.

Bilmar Beach Resort

Scene

Mid-range beach hotel with lots of family-friendly amenities and somewhat dated decor

The Bilmar Beach Resort is painted bright yellow and there’s a colorful overhang at the front entrance. The lobby is a little tired; it's decorated with blue mosaic tiling, plain walls, an aquarium, and potted plants. The building is set up as an open-air hotel, with rooms overlooking the swimming pool in the middle (rooms closest to the pool can be noisy). There’s an upper deck with lounge chairs and orange and blue sofas, as well as games like ping-pong and corn hole.

The main swimming pool and hot tub are surrounded by blue lounge chairs and towels are available at the front deck. A quieter, smaller pool is located on the other side of the hotel. The hotel is located on a long stretch of beach, however, the wide shore lends to a long walk to get to the water. Two restaurants are on site: the busy Sloppy Joe’s with a full menu and entertainment, and Bazzie’s Beach Bar, a quieter, smaller dining spot for breakfast and lunch.

Parking is free, although during busier days at the beach guests might be asked to park their cars in the overflow lot across the street. Room rates are comparable to others in the area, including the neighboring Thunderbird Beach Resort.

Location

Resort on the beach surrounded by activity and close to John’s Pass in Madeira Beach

The Bilmar Beach Resort sits on a three-mile stretch of beach, and is surrounded by other hotels on Treasure Island. Popular spots include Ricky’s T’s, Shrimpy’s Po-Boys Pub, and Britt’s Pizza across the street. A Walgreens drugstore is also across the street, and provides space for overflow parking during busy days. John’s Pass with its variety of dining and shopping options, is a historical point of interest that was created after a hurricane split the land into two. A five-minute drive north, the fishing village and boardwalk hosts restaurants, shops, outdoor water sports and entertainment. The hotel is about a 30-minute drive from St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport.

Rooms

Small rooms with kitchenettes and dated, kitschy Florida decor

Rooms are small, but each includes a kitchenette. Flat-screen TVs are mounted on the wall opposite the bed with a cabinet overhead. Kitchenettes are fully stocked with tableware, and functional appliances including a microwave, mini-fridge and coffeemaker. Larger suites also have a two-burner stove and full-size refrigerator, but when it is opened all the way, the entry to the door is blocked. Bathrooms are generic. with shower/tub combos. The hotel rooms are decorated with somewhat tired Florida themes -- metal palm frond light fixtures, colorful beach stripes or floral bed comforters, and dark carpeting. Ground-floor rooms facing the Gulf open directly onto the beach, while upper-floor rooms that overlook the beach, rather than the pool, tend to be quieter.
