Bottom Line

The 72-room PortoBay Marques is an upper-middle-range hotel on a quiet street near Lisbon's business district and a two-minute walk to the Marques de Pombal Metro station. Luxury shopping on Avenida da Liberdade is also nearby, and it's a 10-minute drive or metro trip to the city's historic neighborhoods. Rooms are modern and attractive, and include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electric kettles. Suites feature kitchenettes and balconies with nice city views. The restaurant serves all meals, including a well-liked breakfast, and there's a bar in the lobby. A fitness room is fine for a basic workout, and the rooftop pool and bar are a bonus, but the latter close early.  Alternatively, the nearby Marques De Pombal Hotel has sharp modern style and a spa, though rates will be higher.

PortoBay Marques

Scene

Classic style with quiet, reserved ambience between old and new Lisbon

Previously the Hotel Aviz, the PortoBay Marques opened with its new name in 2016. The nine-story limestone building sits on a quiet shaded street with a cobblestone sidewalk. Large potted plants flank the entrance, and wicker tables and chairs sit out front on the sidewalk, helping it blend into the Lisbon street scene. The hotel sits between the historic districts of the city and the newer business-oriented parts of town, and its style mirrors that fact. While it's classically elegant from the outside, inside, the lobby is done in a pleasantly modern style, featuring tones like cream and sage green, industrial and rustic furniture, and a row of sofas and chairs where guests can hang out. Bookcases filled with books and vintage knickknacks add a homey touch. Overall, the hotel has a classic, reserved atmosphere popular with couples as well as families.

Location

On a fairly quiet street near Pombal Square, within walking distance of restaurants and shops

The hotel is located on a quiet street in the heart of Lisbon, alongside Avenida da Liberdade and Marques de Pombal Square. Although there are more charming areas of Lisbon, the property’s location is a solid bet for those looking to stay near the bustling historic zones, but not amid the wild nightlife. There are a good number of restaurants and snack bars nearby, and the metro at Marques de Pombal is just a two-minute walk from the hotel. It will take 10 minutes by metro to reach Baixa/Chiado and the other historic neighborhoods closer to the river. Luxury shopping along Avenida da Liberdade is within seven minutes on foot. It's a 10-minute cab ride to Rossio Station for rail connections to Porto (the rail station can also be reached by metro), and it's a 15-minute cab ride in light traffic to Lisbon's airport. Alternatively, the same trip to the airport will take 35 minutes by metro.

Rooms

Attractive rooms with flat-screen TVs and minibars, plus suites with kitchenettes and city-view balconies

Rooms are simple and attractive, with modern light wood furniture, tan accent walls and drapery, and plaid accent pillows on the beds that give things a familiar, homey quality. Brown carpeting matches the bed runners, and large black-and-white photos hang on the walls to add a dash of vintage style. Some rooms can be a little snug, with Standard Rooms only offering 18-square-meter floor plans (194 square feet), though Superior Rooms and Suites are plenty roomy, especially for Lisbon. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles, stereos, and safes. Suites add more space, with a separate living and dining area, and kitchenettes with mini-fridges, microwaves, and sinks. Some rooms have furnished concrete balconies that offer nice views of the surrounding streets. Bathrooms are modern, with square sinks, tub/shower combos, toiletries, and hairdryers.

Features

Restaurant, lobby bar, rooftop pool with terrace and bar, and simple fitness room with sauna

Features here are on par with most of the larger scale hotels in this part of Lisbon. The hotel's restaurant, Trato32, serves all meals in a cozy space with wood floors, tables, and chairs, and modern lighting hanging overhead. Skylights allow in plenty of natural light. The menu offers a variety of pasta dishes, as well as Italian desserts -- it gets solid marks from previous guests. Bar de Baixo serves drinks and snacks in the lobby, and there's another bar by the pool. Room service is available for extra fees.

The rooftop pool is small, but lovely, with beautiful views over the city. The tiny wooden deck is crowded with cushioned lounge chairs and sofas topped by umbrellas. The Bar de Cima is a great place for alfresco drinks with city views, but unfortunately it closes early (as does the pool). The fitness room also is on this floor, offering a sauna and steam room and nice views for guests working out on the cardio machines or with free weights. It's simple, but will do for a basic workout. There's a small computer corner, but Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
