Bottom Line

This upscale boutique is centrally located between Bairro Alto and Chiado neighborhoods, within walking distance to attractions. Its 55 rooms have been individually decorated and have wonderful extras depending on their category: Some have clawfoot tubs, others Ralph Lauren-designed wallpaper, Nuno Cera photos, or balconies. But there’s a fee for Wi-Fi and some rooms are tiny. There’s a nice restaurant serving local cuisine, a cocktail bar that's great for a nightcap, and conveniences such as a business center and massages. But the highlight here is the wonderful rooftop terrace, boasting gorgeous city and river views. However, this all comes with a hefty price tag, so it’s worth comparing prices with other upscale properties in the area. Also, don’t expect Ritz-Carlton-style luxury -- it’s the boutique-y details that shine here.

Bairro Alto Hotel

Location

Perfectly located within walking distance to major attractions and nightlife

The Bairro Alto Hotel has a great, central location for tourists. Located between Bairro Alto and Chiado, the hotel is within walking distance of the Baixa/Chiado metro stop and the heart of Baxia, Chiado, and Bairro Alto neighborhoods.

Bairro Alto is a bustling area in Lisbon. Popular due to its lively nightlife spots, it is also home to vintage and antique shops. The cobblestone streets are often crowded with people, as are the area's bars and restaurants. Largely spared during the earthquake, Bairro Alto has some beautiful historic monuments and sights. Like in other areas of Lisbon, visitors should be careful in Bairro Alto at night, especially on the side streets; they have a reputation for loitering drug dealers. Baxia, the financial district, attracts mainly business travelers. But it does have good shopping, particularly for gold and silver. West of Baxia, Chiado is the main shopping district.

  • 20-minute drive to Lisbon Portela Airport, or 35 minutes via public transportation
  • 6-minute walk to the Santa Justa historic elevator, with great views
  • 7-minute walk to the Baixa/Chiado metro stop
  • 7-minute walk to Rossio, a main square
  • 12-minute walk to Praca do Comercio, a beautiful plaza facing the river
  • 17-minute walk to Casa dos Bicos
  • 18-minute walk to St. George's Castle
  • 5-minute drive to the National Museum of Ancient Art, or 14 minutes via public transportation
  • 6-minute drive to Alfama, or 17 minutes via public transportation
  • 12-minute drive to the Coach Museum, the largest museum of royal coaches in the world, or 27 minutes via public transportation[[
  • 14-minute drive to the Belem Tower, or 41 minutes via public transportation
  • 14-minute drive to the Jeronimos Monastery, or 30 minutes via public transportation
