Bottom Line

The Lisbon City Hotel is a barebones budget option in a convenient location; not right in the heart of things along Avenida da Liberdade, but within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and sights. The hotel has very few amenities; no spa, no fitness center, no full restaurant -- just a small, communal terrace with sweeping city views. But the hotel is a good value, with nice freebies such as free Wi-Fi and a free breakfast buffet. Rooms are simple and sparse; most are small and are equipped with just a tiny desk, a tiny flat-screen TV, and a tiny bathroom. But rooms do feature relatively spacious balconies with tables and chairs. It's a solid value pick for guests who don't mind the lack of amenities and the walk (usually about 15 minutes) to nearby sights.

Lisbon City Hotel

Location

On an attractive tree-lined street in Anjos

Lisbon City Hotel sits on an attractive street in Anjos, a neighborhood east of the bustling street Avenida da Liberdade, where much of the activity of the city takes place. However, this hotel is nonetheless situated in a convenient location within walking distance of numerous sights.

Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main artery, is a tree-lined street packed with high-end hotels and shops. But Bairro Alto is also a bustling area in Lisbon. Popular due to its lively nightlife spots, it is also home to vintage and antique shops. The cobblestone streets are often crowded with people, as are the area's bars and restaurants. Largely spared during the earthquake, Bairro Alto has some beautiful historic monuments and sights. As in other areas of Lisbon, visitors should be careful in Bairro Alto at night, especially on the side streets; they have a reputation for loitering drug dealers.

Nearby Alfama, a Moorish area, is a fishing town with great fado clubs. Like Bairro Alto, it can also be a bit dangerous at nights. Baxia, the financial district, attracts mainly business travelers. But it does have good shopping, particularly for gold and silver. West of Baxia, Chiado is the main shopping district.

  • 16-minute walk to the heart of Baixa
  • 21-minute walk to Chiado, or 7 minutes via public transportation
  • 23-minute walk to Praca de Comercio, a beautiful plaza facing the river, or 10 minutes via public transportation
  • 23-minute walk to Casa dos Bicos, or 18 minutes via public transportation
  • 24-minute walk to Alfama, or 12 minutes via public transportation
  • 25-minute walk to St. George's Castle, or 17 minutes via public transportation
  • 9-minute drive to Barrio Alto, or 19 minutes via public transportation
  • 11-minute drive to the National Museum of Ancient Art, or 22 minutes via public transportation
  • 18-minute drive to the the Coach Museum, the largest museum of royal coaches in the world, or 30 minutes via public transportation
  • 20-minute drive to the Belem Tower, or 36 minutes via public transportation
