Bottom Line

The SANA Reno Hotel is a mid-range hotel near the Sao Sebastiao metro station that resembles an aging luxury apartment building. The 92 rooms are a little more modern than the exteriors, with sturdy beds and blond-wood furniture. The rooftop pool has just enough length to do short laps, and the deck can hold numerous sunbathers. A business center and conference space are available for executives. Travelers interested in a reasonably priced and centrally located hotel in Lisbon should also consider the Mercure Lisboa, which has comparable amenities and more modern decor.

SANA Reno Hotel

Scene

Common areas resemble an aging luxury apartment building

Dating back to 1959, the SANA Reno shows its age, and from the outside, it looks like a dated luxury apartment. Inside, the common areas have a fading mid-century glamor. The ground-floor lounge has metallic leather couches and Oriental rugs. The marble staircase with a metal-tube bannister was probably once elegant but now appears more like a cruise ship relic. Other sections of the lobby have marble walls, floors, and columns. The breakfast room/bar area has newer furniture that brings to mind mid-century design. A long wooden bar and reception desk still showcase the bygone grandeur of the space, although they too seem to have gotten dingier with age. The hotel's small rooftop pool is surrounded by a gray slat deck and white lounge chairs with views of surrounding apartments. Guests are a mix of business travelers and tourists.

Location

In central Lisbon, not far from several historic neighborhoods

For travelers arriving at the Lisbon International Airport, getting to the SANA Reno Hotel is notably convenient. The drive is about 15 minutes, and the metro takes about half an hour. The Center for Modern Art, which focuses on 20th-century pieces by Portuguese and international artists, is only a six-minute walk from the hotel. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, which has a collection of ancient international and some modern art, is six minutes away on foot as well. The Sao Sebastiao metro station is only a five-minute walk from the hotel, and other nearby stations also make it easy for tourists to travel to historic Alfama to see St. George's Castle (22 minutes on the metro, 15 minutes by car). A little north of there, visitors can catch a ride on the Tram 28 (10 minutes by car or 18 minutes by metro), which takes riders throughout the major sections of Lisbon.

Rooms

Minimalist but elegant rooms a step above the typical mid-range fare

The 92 rooms at the SANA Reno Hotel are a bit more polished than what's found in the typical mid-range hotel. Light-gray walls, blond-wood furniture, raspberry-red bed covers, and dark-wood floors give them a refined look. Beds are comfortable, although not particularly plush. Room sizes range from Twins to Suites, and some of the larger rooms have chairs and sofas. Some units also have balconies with views out over nearby apartment buildings. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, bathrobes, and safes. There's no mini-fridge or minibar, though there are snacks and wine for purchase in the room, minibar-style. Bathrooms are small but sleek, with light-gray tile, modern fittings, and shower/tub combos. The floor space, however, is limited. Although the rooms are soundproofed, some guests complain of street noise, particularly on the lower floors.

Features

Rooftop pool, steam and sauna, meeting space, and breakfast restaurant/bar with light meals

The SANA Reno Hotel offers decent amenities for a hotel of its pearl rating. Its rooftop pool is moderately sized, just long enough to do laps, and has a deck with numerous chairs for sunbathing. A sauna and steam room give guests other options for sweating, but there's no gym. There's also a breakfast room, though the morning buffet costs extra and the food gets mixed reviews. After breakfast, the space turns into a bar and light meals are also available. There's also a conference room with enough space for a boardroom meeting or small sales presentation. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Cribs are free, and in-room babysitting can be arranged for a fee.
