Bottom Line

The 286-room Tivoli Lisboa is an attractive, upscale hotel located along bustling Avenida da Liberdade. It's within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife, and major attractions, and the Avenida Metro station is nearby as well. Rooms are airy and modern, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and coffeemakers. The marble bathrooms are particularly sleek and modern. There are two upmarket restaurants, while two bars include a popular rooftop option with stunning city views. It draws a lively mix of locals and tourists, and hosts live music on weekends. There's also a fitness center plus a seasonal outdoor pool, plus numerous events spaces. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Travelers looking for a centrally located place with lower rates could check out the NH Liberdade, but it lacks a fitness center.

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa

Scene

Contemporary hotel with traditional touches, suitable for all types of travelers

Housed in a classic stunner that dates back to the 1930s, this hotel combines traditional Portuguese decor with modern amenities. Its two-story lobby is spacious and grand, with gleaming marble floors, fresh flowers, and vivid jewel-tone touches, like the blue rug that makes it appear as if a pool flows through the center of the space. Cushy contemporary sofas and chairs offer lots of seating options, and more seating is found upstairs on the mezzanine, where multiple groupings of tables and chairs provide nice spots for informal meetings. There are numerous common spaces here, and the hotel is buzzing with activity at almost all times. That's especially true of its rooftop terrace, with spectacular city views that draw both locals and tourists alike. With its location close to tourist attractions as well as businesses, this place can meet the needs of both business travelers and tourists. Weekdays attract mostly business travelers, while tourists of all stripes pour in on the weekends, including couples, groups, families, and solo travelers.

Location

On lively Avenida da Liberdade, within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife, and shopping

Tivoli Lisboa has a great, central location for tourists. It's along Avenida da Liberdade and within walking distance of the Avenida Metro stop (two minutes on foot). Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main artery, is a tree-lined street packed with high-end hotels and shops. Baxia, Chiado, and Bairro Alto are all less than 15 minutes away on foot. The latter is known as the city's party core, with bars spilling out into the streets until quite late at night. For something a bit more refined, head uphill to Principe Real, which has trendy boutiques and cafes, plus a great Sunday market. It's a 10-minute walk away. The photogenic Ascensor da Gloria is also 10 minutes away on foot. Just keep in mind that this city is hilly, and you'll likely have to climb steps or steep inclines at some point in your journey. Plan on a 20-minute drive to reach Lisbon Portela Airport, or about 35 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Airy, modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, coffeemakers, and safes

Standard and Deluxe Rooms are on the small side, but they are airy and bright, with modern, clean-lined wood furniture, green or soft blue bed runners on white linens, beige carpeting, and beige walls. Period molding and high ceilings provide historic flavor, and accent lighting in the ceiling gives everything a modern touch. Framed photographs hang on the walls. Marble-topped desks with two chairs are nice extras, and speak to the overall classy style here (which isn't the case at all Tivoli properties, unfortunately). Standard features include flat-screen TVs, minibars, coffeemakers, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and safes. Collection-level rooms and suites have separate sitting areas plus Nespresso coffeemakers. Bathrooms are modern and sleek, with marble tiled tubs and showers, white countertops, premium toiletries, hairdryers, and magnifying mirrors. Suites provide robes and slippers. Some rooms have nice views of the city, though a few guests with rooms near the Sky Bar have noted that noise can be an issue.

Features

Two restaurants, rooftop bar, lobby bar, outdoor pool, fitness center, events spaces

In addition to its outstanding location, this hotel has plenty to offer, although it lacks a spa. There are two upscale restaurants, and both were renovated in 2017. Breakfast buffets are available, but are not part of standard rates. Cervejaria Liberdade serves seafood and Portuguese fare for lunch and dinner in a colorful, laid-back setting on the first floor. One beautiful open wall displays bottles of wine on lighted shelves. The elegant Terrace Restaurant is found on the top floor and is open for all meals. Guests can dine inside by the large windows, or out on the wooden terrace with nice views over the city.  Room service is available. The rooftop Sky Bar is a laid-back space with stunning views over the city. It serves drinks and light fare in the summer, and there's live music on weekend nights. Another bar in the lobby has a more business-like atmosphere and is a good place for informal meetings and gatherings.

The outdoor pool is open seasonally. It's surrounded by tropical trees and cushioned lounge chairs lined up on the pool deck. A spacious fitness center offers cardio and weight-training equipment. Four events spaces can accommodate business and social gatherings, and planners are available to assist with the details. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Airport transfers are available for a fee.
