Lower-category rooms can be small, especially for the price
The Athenaeum Hotel is a luxury property located just across the street from beautiful Green Park in Mayfair, one of London's most exclusive central districts. With 164 rooms and 16 apartments, the upscale hotel offers an impressive whiskey bar, fine dining restaurant, and gym/spa facilities (free for guests). Rooms and spaces are colorful with custom modern furniture and a British theme throughout. The Athenaeum is also walking distance from many of London's top attractions, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Trafalgar Square, but some guests feel the lower-category rooms are small, especially for the price.
The Athenaeum has created a refreshing atmosphere in both the private and public spaces of the building, thanks to the careful interior design of the hotel. Colors of orange, red, white, and champagne are used in the bright and airy rooms. Imperial guard and doubledecker bus figurines are on display next to the beds, which is a nice playful touch and gives the rooms a true British feel. Public spaces such as the lounge and whiskey room have also been carefully designed, with fresh floral arrangements in the lobby and old black and white photographs from London's former days.
In the posh area of Mayfair, close to many top attractions
The Athenaeum is located just across the street from the famous Green Park -- which has footpaths that lead directly to Buckingham Palace -- and a tube station that has great transportation access (including Heathrow Airport via the Piccadilly Line). The hotel's locale in Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive neighborhoods, with many luxury restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops. From the hotel guests are walking distance from many important and historical attractions, including Big Ben, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, and Oxford Street.
Quirky, stylish rooms with a few nice little extras
Rooms at the Athenaeum feel unique, not only for their interior design (many have a stylish mix of red, orange, creams, and browns) but because of the extras as well. Much of the bedding and furniture is tailored specifically for the hotel, such as the unusual chairs and British decor accents (think: toy soldiers, figurines of doubledecker buses). Bathrooms are well stocked with free toiletries and are complete with Italian marble and black granite. Climate and room lighting can be changed by a bedside control, and rooms have free snacks and refreshments, as well as an espresso machine.
The hotel has many notable extra features. There's a small gym, sauna, steam room, and hot tub connected to the Athenaeum's spa, which has a wide array of treatments. The Whiskey Room on the ground floor has one of the biggest collections of whiskey in the city, with a free cheese and fruit board available to guests in the afternoons. Athenaeum's dining facilities in the Garden Room are also worth noting; the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, and there is a large menu.
