At the southern tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas -- a beach town on the stretch of coastline collectively known as Los Cabos (The Capes) -- has long been a popular vacation spot for sun-worshipping party seekers. (Hence, the nickname Cabo San Loco.)
One reason why Los Cabos remains a staple in the beach resort world is its California-esque vibe. It almost feels like an extension of Southern California, with similar deluxe accommodations, striking golf courses, and high-end shops.
All posh-ness aside, Cabo San Lucas still presents visitors with stunning scenery and a distinct Mexican charm, especially around the coastline. The large cluster of rock formations on Land's End is famously beautiful, and there's great whale watching January through March (particularly in March). Old churches, charming restaurants, and handicraft vendors prove that this town is more than just a wild spring-break getaway.
Where to Stay
Visitors looking to dive head first into all the action should aim for the Downtown area, Cabo San Lucas' unrivaled tourist center. Those seeking a more authentic (or as authentic as you can get in Cabo!) experience may want to check out hotels in the Marina. This fishing area offers more interaction with locals. Water sports enthusiasts should look to stay around Medano Beach, which offers plenty of water sport activities and equipment rentals. Meanwhile, Pedregal Hills is a safe and quiet residential area (home to many U.S. citizens), which might be better for families.
