Pros

  • Located on the beach within walking distance to town
  • Massive pool with a swim-up bar and over-size cabana beds

  • All suites have private plunge pools and kitchens (though fridges are smaller than average)

Cons

  • On-site timeshare sellers are pushy
  • Jellyfish warning on the beach is a bit disconcerting
  • Numerous complaints about the pool needing to be heated
  • Sexy open bathrooms aren't particularly kid-friendly (but are a pro for some)
  • Fee for Wi-Fi

Bottom Line

The atmosphere at the Grand Mayan is peaceful (aside from pushy timeshare sellers): The massive pool looks out onto a pristine beach, the Brio Spa has soothing decor, and the chic and spacious rooms feature private balconies and bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs and walk-in showers. In the quiet area of San Jose del Cabo (as opposed to party-hearty Cabo San Lucas), the hotel is within walking distance of town and caters toward couples with its sexy open bathrooms and upscale restaurants (although there are some mixed reviews on the food). Drawbacks, however, are fairly significant -- the pool temperature is often chilly, and the beach is riddled with jellyfish.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Grand Mayan at Vidanta Los Cabos

Location

On a somewhat busy road dotted with hotels, and not much is within walking distance except for some low-key attractions, like the estuary

The hotel is on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo, and the immediate area doesn't offer too much within walking distance -- the road it's located on is mostly dotted with various hotels. The area, much more low-key than downtown Cabo San Lucas or even downtown San Jose del Cabo, offers a more relaxed pace. For example, one of the closest attractions within walking distance is the San Jose Estuary, which is a great spot for kayaking, walking, and bird watching.

Close to the party-hearty area of Cabos San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo is the quainter, historic answer to a beach vacation in Los Cabos. The waters are rough and there's less of a nightlife, but the area retains its Mexican flair, and features numerous restaurants and galleries. It is also close to the airport.

  • 20-minute drive to Los Cabos International Airport
  • 7-minute walk to San Jose Estuary
  • 20-minute walk to downtown San Jose del Cabo
  • 10-minute drive to Los Cabos Port
  • 30-minute drive to Medano Beach, known for its calm waters and packed beaches
  • 30-minute drive to downtown Cabo's party spots
  • 33-minute drive to great views of Land's End, a picturesque rock formation on the coast
