Bottom Line

The no-frills Hotel Asturias has a great location in the heart of Madrid within easy walking distance to major attractions, shopping, dining, and nightlife. Most of the 175 rooms are spacious and bright, but have worn, dated decor, and old tube TVs. The highlight of the rooms isn't the decor, but the beautiful architecture of this historic building -- along with small, wrought-iron balconies. Some rooms have been renovated and feature flat-screen TVs. This is an adequate budget pick, but it's worth checking out the nearby High Tech Petite Palace Arenal as alternate affordable option.

Hotel Asturias

Location

Two blocks from Sol, the heart of Madrid on the edge of Huertas neighborhood

Hotel Asturias has an ideal location two blocks from Puerta del Sol, steps from Huertas (a major nightlife hotspot), and near many attractions. Right across the street from the hotel is a bus terminal, where many bus lines start and end, and the subway is down the street. However, the location is very convenient for those who want to explore the city on foot. Many must-see attractions such as Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, Cibeles, and Gran Via are all within an easy walking distance.

Great shopping around Sol and Gran Via are a stroll away, as is La Latina, a tapas and al fresco dining and drinking hotspot (cross beautiful Plaza Mayor to get there). The Austrias area, with 17th-century architecture and cobblestone streets is just a few blocks down, past Puerta del Sol.

Sol is the heart of Madrid, both geographically speaking and in a figurative sense. “Kilometer Zero” (where all roads in Spain are said to start), shopping, dining, nightlife, and major tourist attractions are all here. This means many tourists in Madrid never leave the neighborhood. For those who prefer taking public transportation, Sol is one of the major transportation hubs in Madrid, with trains, buses, and several subway lines converging on the same spot.

  • 25-minute drive to Madrid-Barajas Airport
  • Steps to restaurants and bars
  • 2-minute walk to Puerta del Sol
  • 6-minute walk to shopping on Gran Via
  • 8-minute walk to Plaza Mayor
  • 8-minute walk to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
  • 9-minute walk to Cibeles
  • 10-minute walk to La Latina, a nightlife hotspot
  • 12-minute walk to El Prado Museum
  • 13-minute walk to Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens
  • 15-minute walk to La Almudena Cathedral
  • 15-minute walk to Puerta de Alcala
  • 15-minute walk to Retiro Park, Madrid’s most famous garden
  • 17-minute walk to Reina Sofia Museum
  • 20-minute walk to upscale shopping on Serrano Street
  • 25-minute walk to Templo de Debod Park, with great views and an original Egyptian temple
  • 12-minute subway ride to Atocha train station
  • 30-minute subway ride to Plaza de Castilla, the financial district
