Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Great location on a quiet street between Gran Via and Sol
  • Clean, contemporary rooms with comfortable beds
  • All rooms have work desks, wood floors, and free minibar
  • Big, modern bathrooms (some with soaking tubs)
  • Some rooms have balconies with great city views
  • Lovely historic restaurant with outdoor seating
  • Quality breakfast buffet
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Interior rooms face a tiny courtyard and can be dark
  • Some rooms on the small side

Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Hotel Preciados VIP has a wonderful location in the heart of Madrid, between Sol and Gran Via. Clean, quiet, contemporary rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, comfortable beds, and double-glazed windows to limit street noise. Nice touches include work desks, wood floors, and big bathrooms, some with soaking tubs. It's not cheap, but the location is hard to beat, and the price includes great freebies including minibar items restocked daily and Wi-Fi. Some rooms also have balconies with city views. The historic restaurant, once a meeting spot for famous 19th century poets and authors, serves traditional Spanish cuisine for a reasonable price -- and even has some outdoor seating.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

On a pedestrian street in the heart of Madrid

The location of Hotel Preciados VIP is in the middle of the action. Gran Via, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, La Almudena Cathedral, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens are all within less than a 15-minute walk from the property. Preciados is a pedestrian street running from Puerta del Sol to Plaza de Santo Domingo, a small square off Gran Via. The central location brings hordes of tourists and locals alike day and night, but the hotel is on the quieter part of the street.

Great shopping around Sol and Gran Via are an easy walk away, as is young nightlife in the Huertas neighborhood. La Latina, a tapas and al fresco dining and drinking hotspot, is a quick stroll away (cross beautiful Plaza Mayor to get there), and the Austrias area, with beautiful 17th-century architecture and cobblestone streets is just a few blocks from the hotel.

Sol is the heart of Madrid, both geographically speaking and in a figurative sense. “Kilometer Zero” (where all roads in Spain are said to start), shopping, dining, nightlife, and major tourist attractions are all here. This means many tourists in Madrid never leave the neighborhood. Also, its central location is ideal for those who like to explore the city on foot. But those who prefer taking public transportation, there are many bus stops and two Metro stations within a block.

  • 25-minute drive to Madrid-Barajas Airport
  • Steps to restaurants and bars
  • 1-minute walk to shopping on Gran Via
  • 6-minute walk to Puerta del Sol
  • 6-minute walk to Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace, the Royal Theater, and Sabatini Gardens
  • 7-minute walk to Plaza Mayor
  • 10-minute walk to La Latina, a nightlife hotspot
  • 13-minute walk to La Almudena Cathedral
  • 14-minute walk to Templo de Debod Park, with great views and an original Egyptian temple
  • 16-minute walk to Cibeles
  • 17-minute walk to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
  • 18-minute walk to El Prado Museum
  • 20-minute walk to Reina Sofia Museum
  • 21-minute walk to Puerta de Alcala
  • 22-minute walk to Retiro Park, Madrid’s most famous garden
  • 24-minute walk or 13-minute Metro ride to upscale shopping on Serrano Street
  • 19-minute Metro ride to Atocha train station
  • 25-minute subway ride to Plaza de Castilla, the financial district
