Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Centrally located on Main Street
  • Charming rooms with antique-style furnishings
  • Rejuvenation Spa with sauna and steam room
  • Well-equipped fitness center
  • Free Wi-Fi and parking
  • White-noise machines and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs in rooms
  • Free local, organic full-farm breakfast
  • Free afternoon tea with home-baked scones
  • Business center with computer, printer, and faxing
  • Eco-friendly practices
  • Open year-round

Cons

  • Located on Main Street, so street noise can be an issue
  • Some rooms are smaller (common in historic buildings)
  • Can be pricey during the high season
  • No pool or Jacuzzi

Bottom Line

Located centrally along a quaint stretch of Main Street, the Hob Knob is a welcoming bed & breakfast with a well-landscaped yard and wrap-around porch. Of course, in high-tourist season the prices reflect its status as a popular boutique -- but in a lot of ways, you do get what you pay for. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with Berber carpeting, luxurious European linens and bathrobes, lovely Classic American-cottage decor (though some rooms feel more tended to than others), and pretty bathrooms with marble sinks. Other highlights include the free organic, full-farm breakfast, and the fact that downtown Edgartown is a short walk away. This place isn't really geared toward families, though -- children under the age of seven aren't allowed, and teens would likely be bored by the lack of a pool on-site.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

Casual elegance in a lovely historic building

The Hob Knob
The Hob Knob

The Hob Knob is aptly named -- each nook of this property is seemingly crafted to entice visitors to "hob knob" (mix, socialize or rub elbows) with each other. It's no surprise that John F. Kennedy Jr. stayed here while on a sailing regatta in 1947. Throughout the main spaces of the inn, guests will find home-like areas to relax -- two quaint indoor breakfast areas, two lovely patios with seating, a wrap-around front porch complete with white wicker furniture (rocking chair included), a living-room-like lounge area where you can help yourself to an honor bar of beer and wine, and a reading room with cozy furniture surrounding a wood-burning fireplace.

 Location

Walking distance to downtown Edgartown

Located on bustling Main Street, the Hob Knob is just a short distance from all the shops and restaurants in downtown Edgartown.

Martha's Vineyard is an island off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Long known as a place where politicians, celebrities, and wealthy elite go to summer vacation, Martha's Vineyard also draws a heavy crowd of coastal-loving tourists. During the summer, the population more than quadruples with visitors, but the rest of the year it's a quiet and relaxing coastal hideaway. Edgartown is the island's largest town and is a popular destination because of the many shops, galleries, and restaurants on Main Street. The movie "Jaws" was also filmed here.

For beautiful sunrises, head over to Lighthouse Beach; for sunsets, South Beach in Katama is a popular destination. Catch the ferry into Oak Bluffs, a town known for its adorable gingerbread cottages, or into Vineyard Haven. Both towns offer plenty of cute shops, galleries, and restaurants, and are good jumping-off points for visiting the rest of the island. Chappaquiddick Island is just across the way (most famous for Ted Kennedy's infamous car accident).

On the west side of the island (a bit more remote than on the east), Menemsha is known as the spot for unbelievable sunsets along the harbor. The Gay Head Cliffs, and Gay Head Lighthouse, are also local points of interest.

Getting to Martha's Vineyard can only be done by ferry or air. Ferries run out of Woods Hole, Falmouth, New Bedford, Hyannis (all MA locations), and Quonset Point, RI into Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven. If you want to bring a car to the island, you have to depart from Woods Hole, as the Steamship Authority is the only ferry that transports cars. Cape Air, US Airways and Jet Blue offer service into Martha's Vineyard Airport for those choosing to fly.

If you don't intend to do much traveling around the island, a car isn't necessary. The Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority operates efficient buses that travel the island year round. And given the extreme lack of parking in town, a car can be a huge headache in the summer. Biking is another popular mode of transportation.

  • 11-minute drive to Martha's Vineyard Airport
  • 5-minute walk to Main Street with plenty of restaurants, shops, and galleries
  • 12-minute walk to Lighthouse Beach (great for sunrise)
  • 15-minute drive to Oak Bluffs
  • 20-minute drive to Vineyard Haven
  • 30-minute drive to Menemsha Beach
  • 45-minute ferry ride from Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven

 Rooms

Classic New England style in a historic home

The Deluxe King Room at the Hob Knob
The Deluxe King Room at the Hob Knob

With antique-style furnishings, local artwork, and country linens, the rooms at Hob Knob are decorated in a casually elegant style that is quintessential colonial New England (though some feel more sparse than others). As is standard with old, historic homes, some rooms and bathrooms are smaller. Every room includes a white-noise machine, a nod to the fact that being located on Main Street has its pluses and minuses. While the location is great for getting to downtown Edgartown in just a few-minutes walk, when traffic is heavy it can be loud on the street. Also, rooms on the bottom level in the back have no control over temperature -- they are all connected via one air-conditioning control, so that may be a problem for some.
