Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Retro-chic rooms with blue-and-white decor
  • Rooftop pool gets direct sun all day; food and drinks available at the pool bar
  • Clubby cocktail lounge with fresh gourmet concoctions
  • Hip basement nightclub playing 90s hits
  • Fitness center with modern cardio machines and free weights
  • 55-inch flat-screen TVs and iPod docks
  • iBahn iPhone app to use your phone as a TV remote or view TV content on your phone throughout the hotel
  • Dolce Italian restaurant has a chic setting and solid (if not memorable) food
  • On Collins Avenue, a block from the beach

Cons

  • Rooms lack tubs and closets (though external closet racks can be requested)
  • No good beach views (not on the beach-facing side of the street)
  • No food and drink service from pool loungers (though there is a pool bar)
  • No spa services on-site
  • Studios are tiny (suited for one person)
  • Signage is confusing (says The Gale on the front and The Regent on the back)
  • Noisy first-floor rooms located in the hallway between the lobby and cocktail lounge

Bottom Line

This historic Art Deco hotel on Collins Avenue got a breath of new life when it reopened as a stylish 87-room boutique in late 2012. Retro-chic rooms have black-and-white photos on the walls and beachy blue-and-white decor; all have whopping 55-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and sleek bathrooms with walk-in showers (but no tubs). The sunny rooftop pool; clubby lounge with fancy, fresh cocktails; and the super-hip basement nightclub with 80s decor and a soundtrack of 90s hits are all draws. But be warned that the signage can be confusing -- it says The Gale on the front and The Regent on the back, for the two historic hotels that were combined to form the current property. Also, some rooms are noisy, there are no good beach views, and Studios are tiny.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

On a bustling stretch of Collins Avenue, across the street from the Delano and one block from the beach

The Gale South Beach has an excellent location on posh upper Collins Avenue, right across the street from the iconic Delano Hotel. But it's not on the beach-facing side of the street, meaning the views aren't great. Still, the beach is a block away, and some of Miami's hottest restaurants, shops, and nightlife can all be found in the immediate area.

To the north are popular high-end hangouts at the Fontainebleau and W South Beach. To the south, things get less exclusive and more populist along the famed Ocean Drive, with its busy boardwalk, outdoor bars and cafes, and more affordable boutique hotels.

  • 5 -minute walk to Lincoln Road outdoor mall
  • 8-minute walk to Ocean Drive
  • 7-minute walk to the Miami Convention Center
  • 15-minute drive from Miami International Airport
  • 6-minute walk to the Bass Museum of Art
  • 2-minute drive to the Wolfsonian library and museum
  • 5-minute walk to the Jackie Gleason Theatre of The Performing Arts
  • 11-minute walk to Lummus Park
  • 12-minute walk to the Holocaust Memorial
  • 13-minute walk to the World Erotic Art Museum
  • 11-minute walk to Miami Botanical Garden
  • 12-minute drive or 32-minute bus ride Bal Harbour Luxury Shops
